Daṇḍin is a 6th-7th century Sanskrit author of prose romances and expounder on poetics. Although he produced literature on his own, most notably the Daśakumāracarita, first translated in 1927 as Hindoo Tales, or The Adventures of the Ten Princes, he is best known for composing the Kāvyādarśa ('Mirror of Poetry'), the handbook of classical Sanskrit poetics, or Kāvya. His writings were all in Sanskrit. He lived in Kanchipuram in modern-day Tamil Nadu.

Kulasekara Varman (reign 800–820 AD) also known as Kulashekhara Alwar (Tamil: குலசேகர ஆழ்வார்) was the founder and King of the Later Chera Kingdom (Mahodayapuram Kulasekharas) from 800 AD until his departure from public life, a devotional Vaishnavism poet and one of the 12 celebrated Alwars...

He is also considered the author of the beautiful devotional lyric in Sanskrit, the Mukundamala.

According to Prof D.H.H. Ingalls, Dandin should be considered the greatest critic of Sanskrit poetry.

According to Prof D.H.H. Ingalls, Dandin should be considered the greatest *traditional* critic of Sanskrit poetry.
