Can a Pope resign? Can any of the Shankaracharyas resign? Can the Delhi Jumma Masjid guy resign?

The Bishop is appointed by the Monarch. Now, when even the Monarch can abdicate, I am sure the Bishop can resign.

I thought Popes can step down and has happened a couple of times in the past.

The Pope can resign, as can the Shankaracharyas, I thought. There was that time when Jayendra Saraswati of Kanchi disappeared and there was talk of appointing the next guy in line, no? Not sure how the Shahi Imam post of Jama Masjid words -- unlike the other two, it is hereditary, so I suspect the father can leave the post to appoint his son.

Very nice... these guys had it all figured out all those centuries ago. Back then they would have organized to burn the Goldmans of the day at the stake though.
