aurangazeb the munificent was exhorting hindus to modernize their temples, which were stuck in pre 10th century design. that's why he destroyed them so they can be rebuilt with modern technology. that is why even tho he looks on the surface to be a religious thug, he was actually a great friend and helped them a lot over the ages.
