No one is denying that racism exists. But, you know, if you lost out on the looks department, people might be just repulsed by that and you could explain it away as racism.

Since when did "looks" become a Presidential decision-factor? I think we are talking about statistically significant factors that are at play here. A vast majority of white women (not urban, not educated) apply their Sunday-devoutness and conservative values instilled due to their teen daughters' behavior on to the nice sounding Mr Romney at the cost of an easily dismissed "other" which is Obama. Now, if you asked them 'are you racist?' they probably would not even recognize it in themselves.
There is a complex persecution complex at play here - and the white women, like aging white men are feeling very threatened by all the forces stacked against them in this country. And while it is easy to spout political correctness as long as your tribe is on top, it is lot harder to do that when you are pushed against the wall.
