Trivia Empty Trivia

Post by Idéfix Mon Jan 07, 2013 8:28 pm

Here is a small set of questions... as usual, no googling, please.

1. The main inscription on this structure reads: Jesus, the son of Mary, said, “the world is a bridge, pass over it but build no house upon it. He who hopes for a day may hope for eternity, but the world endures but an hour. Spend it in prayer, for the rest is unseen.” The structure was built in 1601 CE. What structure is this, where is it located, and who ordered its construction?

2. The photograph below shows an orchid bee of the Euglossa genus that has recently been classified as a separate species. (The pictures on the left are of the new species, the pictures on the right are of a different species of Euglossa bee). The name of the new species is a word popularized by an American television series. Urban Dictionary defines the word as “a catchy phrase to accompany your clever pranks.” What is the name of the new species. Trivia Articl10

3. This European engineering conglomerate has over 100,000 employees in more than 100 countries. It was formed by the merger of a Swiss company with a Swedish company. The Swedish predecessor’s name translates to “General Swedish Electric Company,” but it sounds a lot like the name of a continent. Until 1933, the Swedish predecessor used a Swastika as its logo. Today the conglomerate produces electrical transmission and distribution equipment and key systems for locomotives. Its shares are traded at stock exchanges in New York, Stockholm and Zurich. Name this conglomerate.

4. This product was invented by Robert Chesebrough in 1859, using a residue called “rod wax” that had to removed periodically from oil rig pumps. It is a mixture of hydrocarbons with Carbon numbers higher than 25. Chesebrough named it using the German word for water, the Greek word for oil and a scientific-sounding suffix. The name Chesebrough gave his invention is now considered a generic word part of the language in countries speaking Portuguese, Spanish, German and Nordic languages. In other countries, the name is still used as a brand name. Name the product.

5. This organization was founded one hundred years ago as the Pacific Coast Hindustan Association. Many of its members were students of the University of California at Berkeley, and were also affiliated with the Nalanda Club of Berkeley. The organization published a newspaper in Urdu and Punjabi from San Francisco; the name of the newspaper eventually became the name of the organization. The masthead of the newspaper proclaimed it “an enemy of the British Raj.” During World War I, the organization sought to foment a violent revolt against the British in India, and it enjoyed significant support in the Punjab. Bhagat Singh’s father and uncles were supporters of this organization. Name this organization of Indian freedom fighters.

We used to own an ASEA dishwasher. It was a very quiet and reliable machine. The one we have now is a Miele - not as quiet as the ASEA!

Correct. When I first moved to the US, I was surprised to learn the Berkeley (and UC) connection that the Ghadar party had.

Just one question remains. Here is a hint:

Hint: Vikram Seth quotes this inscription in his poem titled Diwali.

Great guess, but no. I was going to make hint 2 something you likely already guessed: the inscription is in Farsi.

That is the correct answer. Akbar died in 1605. The specific monument is the Buland Darwaza. Trivia 300px-Fatehput_Sikiri_Buland_Darwaza_gate_2010
