A lot of SIs have married their 'sister' although they are cousin sisters.

This reminds me of a kid who came here to the states, worked hard and smart and got his Ph.D in computer science. Then came the time for marriage. He insisted that he would only marry his 'cousin sister' who was in Chennai at that time. It was his paternal aunt's daughter. The father of the girl who never left Chennai was more progressive. He did not like the idea of marrying within the family. But the mother, uncle etc shut that man up. The marriage took place.

The kid is now a professor of computer science at a midwestern university.

what Cashtu?

Bcz, this is VERY COMMON among Naickers, Goundars, Muslims, and scores of other communities - including Jews.

The only reason some people reject such marriages is due to the perceived Genetic issues - which have since been rejected (not much publicity on that though).

In fact, in this day of daily divorce culture, marrying within family might be an idea that needs to be resurrected.

P.S. Theriyadha pisasukku therija pissaasu better.

Equally important is by marrying outside, one is likely to bring in new diseases into the gene pool. There was a Harvard study that I came across that said the genetic disadvantages in internal marriages were overblown.

You need to google and find the reference yourself. I am too busy reading Harvard, AMA J, Lancet, and New Eng J Med.
