North Indian offers to resolve Karnataka-TN dispute
Katju offers to mediate on Cauvery
Mangalore, Dec 5, 2012, DHNS :
Former Supreme Court judge and Press Council of India (PCI) chairman Markandeya Katju has proposed to form and lead a team of mediators to solve the Cauvery issue, if the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments wished.
The PCI chairman was speaking to mediapersons at SDM Law College in the City on Wednesday.
Noting that the Cauvery issue could not be solved by adjudication, but mediation and conciliation would help to overcome the problem, Katju said he was ready to mediate between the two states free of cost, by holding talks with the people.
“Adjudication will not solve the problem permanently, but will only intensify the enmity.
We should learn lessons from the Assam-Nagaland border dispute, where the parties involved have opted for mediation. The chief ministers of both the states should act like statesmen in solving the issue,” he suggested.

Re: North Indian offers to resolve Karnataka-TN dispute
B.S. Yeddyurappa, former Chief Minister, has welcomed the statement of Markandey Katju, chairman of the Press Council of India, that he was willing to mediate in resolving the Cauvery dispute. Addressing presspersons here on Friday, Mr. Yeddyurappa said the governments of the riparian States should talk to Mr. Katju, to see if he could explore a solution to the over sharing of the Cauvery waters, particularly between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Mr. Yeddyurappa came down on MPs and Ministers from Karnataka in the UPA government for their failure to protect the interests of the State.
