CHENNAI: A nine-year-old boy of Indian origin, whose father hails from Tamil Nadu, has become the youngest Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS). Until recently, the record was held by Dubai-based Babar Iqbal, who earned the credential when he was 12. Pranav Kalyan, a 4th grade student of Willow Elementary School, California, cleared the MCTS exam in ASP.NET Framework 3.5 on January 12.

While this achievement is worthy of applause can't help but wonder if it is really worth an effort; 9 year old spending 8 hours a day in front of computer in summer. It's not like he socially mature enough to work as consultant, I guess that was his passion, soccer/basketball camp.

The same can be said of kids, even as young as six, spending hours on end memorizing spellings to win the Spelling Bee contest. Many kids of Indian origin have won this coveted national award. However, I don't think it is time spent at the opportunity cost of playing sports nor do I view them as mutually exclusive.

Long ago, a Pakistani girl got Microsoft certified. And she was also just 9 years old.

Sure they're not mutually exclusive but what are the chances that they participate in both (sports was merely an example), if they enjoy doing that, more power to them.
