Kindly shed your wisdom on what "conscience" is. Is it something instinctive or learned? Do you need a conscience to feel remorse? Conversely, is lack of remorse means an absence of conscience?

Conscience is a particular set of mental responses to certain events. It is a learned behavior. What bothers one man's conscience may not bother other man's conscience.

For example, a butcher may kill hundreds of animals a day. It won't bother his conscience. In fact he may enjoy his job. Whereas a jain muni would rather starve to death than be a butcher.

Is it a behavior or a sense? Do animals have a conscience as far as you know?

Conscience is an in-born trait. To feel, hide, overcome it is a learned trait.

Learned mental response to be precise.

Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma bomber was a gulf war veteran. It seems he use to jump with joy after he blew up Iraqi soldiers even after they waved white flags and were ready to surrender. Apparently he had no conscience.
