haven't combed through the entire article, but i got the gist of it -- which is as expected, that the debt that modern BN owes to the naatya shastra or to the work of the tanjore quartet is not as cut and dry as the recent discussions would seem to suggest.
also a very good portion of the article outlines the tension between the approaches of the modern pioneers - balasaraswati, the doyenne of tanjore who came through the devadasi line and rukmini devi arundale who came from a solidly brahminical background. interesting read.
one thing though is absolutely clear -- the modern organization of the adavus and the bulk of the compositions are all the work of the tanjore quartet.
i am going to leave this article here for all to read with the full expectation that those portions of the article that conform to the naatya shastra-centric viewpoint will be highlighted to kingdom come with capitalization, bolding, and red fonting until the eyes glaze over.
as an aside, wesleyan has a long tradition of fostering education in CM and BN and has close connections to balasaraswati's family. happy reading.
