Actress cum danseuse Shobhana is a rare blende of beauty, talent and brain.Shobhana Chandrakumar Pillai, born on Mar.21,1966, is the niece of the Travancore sisters Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini, all of whom were renowned for their skill in classical Indian dance.Talented and intelligent, she is a woman of substance and calibre.
An accomplished dancer,a wonderful actress,a winner of two National Awards, the founder of Kalarpana, a School of Dance based in Chennai where she teaches dance, she’s also a beauty beyond compare, with the most expressive eyes, chiselled face, seductive smile, and elegant gait. She is often likened to the curvaceous beautiful figurine sculpted in the Indian temples. But, she also admits being arrogant because, according to her, the Natyashastra says that a dancer can afford to be so, by virtue of being superior to others who don’t have the creative gifts that a dancer possesses. So far, she has acted in over 150 movies and in 5 languages.

Pappus Academic and Cultural Trust in collaboration with ABHAI (Association of Bharatanatyam Artistes of India) is conducting a ‘Natya Shastra Workshop’ in Chennai by Dr. Pappu Venugopala Rao. He is a member of Sangeet Natak Akademi and Secretary of the Madras Music Academy. He has authored 15 books, more than hundred research papers on religion, philosophy, music and dance.
The Natya Shastra workshop is scheduled during July 9-14, 2012 at TAG Center and will be inaugurated by Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam and Chitra Visweswaran. N Murali, President of the Music Academy, will distribute the certificates on the last day.
Dr. Rao’s earlier Natya Shastra workshops held in Bangalore, Hyderabad and USA were very well received. In the forthcoming workshop at Chennai, Dr. Rao stated that artistes from Ukraine, Hungary, Bulgaria, Dubai, Singapore, Sri Lanka, US and from many different places within India have confirmed their participation.
Bharata Muni’s Natya Shastra is an ancient Indian treatise on dramaturgy, is the first and best source for reference on every aspect of dance. In recent times, the value of understanding the Shastra is gaining prominence, and at the same time the resources and the resource persons to teach this ancient Sanskrit work are limited. Dr. Pappu Venugopala Rao’s workshops provide an opportunity to the participants to gain rich knowledge.
I spoke to Dr. Rao and feel the following details would prove useful to those wishing to take up the workshop. I thank him for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk about the scope, benefits, eligibility, and the material.
How it would benefit dancers
A dancer starts his/her journey as students or disciples and then goes on to becoming a performer. If they excel, they then graduate to the level of a teacher and composer. It becomes absolutely essential for them to understand the prime source of all aspects of dance at this stage. Classical dances have to conform to Natya Shastra and so a good teacher or a composer must also have an understanding of the Natya Shastra. Just like how gold is transformed into many ornaments, Natya Shastra too manifests into different Indian classical dance forms and styles. Further, it encompasses music, literature, stage design, make up, costumes etc.
About the scope
The workshop is planned to cover all the thirty-six chapters of the Natya Shastra, and not just the “aangika” aspects. Emphasis is on giving a complete over-all view of the great resource.
Who is eligible to attend the workshop
My earlier workshops consisted of dancers from different styles like Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Mohiniattam and also musicians besides a few that attended the workshop due to their interest. Here, it is to be noted that Natya Shastra covers sangeetham in six chapters. Sangeetham constitutes lyrics, instruments and dance.
"Geetam vaadyam tathaa nrityam, trayam sangeetamuchyate.”
Study material provided in the workshop
Soft copy of the entire Natya Shastra in Sanskrit, English transliteration, translation of Natya Shastra by Manmohan Ghosh, Abhinaya Darpanam.

in other words she is arrogant because Naatya Shastra says it is all right for a dancer to be so (and not because Tanjore quartet say its all right to be so).

Re: Chennai: Workshop on Bharatha Muni's Naatya Shastra being conducted ( my view vindicated)
The zeal to delve into the details embalmed within the pages of Bharata's Natyasastra, the oldest treatise on performing arts with special reference to dance/drama and music, brought well-known scholar Dr. Pappu Venugopala Rao to organise a six-day workshop for performing artistes to enhance their grip over classical dance, at Saptaparni.
“The objective behind this workshop is to facilitate the younger generation of dancers to access the knowledge and tradition that is enshrined in 36 chapters of Natyasastra. Dance academics do not take the student through all these chapters. Most deal with aangikam and touch upon a few other sections (maximum three) of the Natyasastra. This treatise is the base upon which any dance tradition across the country evolved. It has no parallel in world literature, barring perhaps the Greek drama tradition,” says the veteran scholar who is an adept in both Sanskrit and Telugu literature.
Natyasastra, he says, was said to be authored by Bharata in 2nd century BC. This hoary tradition is now alive only in three regions: Kashmir, Kuchipudi and Kerala in their drama/dance art forms. The Bhagavatars of Kuchipudi preserved it through their Yakshaganams while the proponents and practitioners of Kathakali followed the Natyasastra to the T. Similarly the dramaturgy of Kashmir preserved this tradition right from 10th century Abhinava Gupta's time.
Pappu Venugopala Rao quickly gives us a glimpse into what exactly constitutes the Natyasastra. “It is meticulous and minutely detailed work on dramaturgy where the author explicitly underlines the norms of stage construction, the pre-and present performance (entry-exit), the costumes and a host of other paraphernalia, apart from body kinetics(angikabhinaya). Nearly four chapters are devoted to Angikabhinaya, another four to Vachikabhinaya, six chapters dwell on music and one on ahaarya (costume). “In just one sentence, I can safely proclaim that there is no text on the subject to better this treatise,” he states. What was envisaged 2000 odd years ago still holds good and that is the universality of our tradition and its authors.
Since it is impossible to delve into the entire text, Pappu Venugopala Rao gave a power point presentation for two hours every evening, wherein he presented the major components of each chapter to the one score dancers attending the workshop for six days at a stretch. It is indeed remarkable to find genuine scholars come forward to elucidate such ancient, mandatory texts of arts and widen the vistas of the present generation of artistes to perform with deep sense of respect and carry the tradition forward.

Re: Chennai: Workshop on Bharatha Muni's Naatya Shastra being conducted ( my view vindicated)
Prabashi is proud to present a Dancer’s Workshop on Natyashastra – the science in Indian Classical Dances. The workshop will be conducted by Roshmi, an eminent exponent of Natyashastra and a leading performing artist from India.
Roshmi will be visiting Portland during October this year. She is a senior disciple of Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam and Director of her dance school - “Bharata Nritya”. The school follows Natyashastryic pedagogic system.
The “Dancer’s Workshop on Natyashastra” is scheduled on 8th October (Saturday) at the BAPS Auditorium, Tigard.
This will be the first time a practical workshop on Natyashastra is being held in Portland. The full-day workshop itself is divided into two parts. A two-and-half hours “Initiation” Session and then a four hours “Advanced” Session. Those sessions should be beneficial to all skill-levels of students from all form/styles of dances.
All participants will carry home Participant’s package (Slokam, Songs-CD etc).
By the end of the day, participants should be able to use the practical parts of the “learning” into some interesting choreography.
Participants may register only for the “Initiation Session” or for “Advanced Session” or for both.
The participant’s fee for the Initiation session is $25 and that for the Advanced session is $40
Participant’s fee for both sessions combined is $55
An early registration is encouraged due to limited available space
