This reminds of a conversation I had more than twenty years ago with an American who was a professor of education. He asked me why there were so many Indian physicists.

I could not come up with a good answer. I think I was like a typical Indian who is not aware of the history of a long tradition of Indians doing pioneering work in Physics.

yes he was. there was another bose, satyendranath bose who made a very fundamental discovery about the statistical distribution of the energies of certain types of particles like photons and helium 4 atoms which came to be known as the bose-einstein statistics. IMO he deserved to win the nobel prize but was ignored.

He is always shown as an plant physiologist but never i knew he was a physicist as well, until i happened to read a IEEE paper on radio science.

he was sure if he sent the paper he had written up on his own, it would get rejected. so he sent it to einstein to review it and then if he thought it was publishable to send it on to the german physics journal annalen der physik. einstein thought it was a remarkable and important paper and did as bose requested after reading through it and concluding that it resolved one of the longstanding mysteries in quantum mechanics. hence it is known today as the bose-einstein statistics for particles with integer spins.

And a whole class of elementary particles is named for him, one of which is the much-hyped "God particle" aka Higgs Boson.

oh but why was it named B-E statistics? Did Einstein contribute anything to the research? or did he act as a mentor to bose?

Oh, much-hyped because the media went crazy over it for a couple of days, probably because it was nicknamed the "god" particle.

i don't recall the exact course of events, but i think einstein was the one who figured out the connection of the paper to something planck had done some time earlier on electromagnetic radiation and the behavior of light quanta. so yeah he deserves some credit.

oh i see. In here the media concentrated more on the Indians working on it rather than the experiment.
