showing my daughter good music
was arguing with daughter about music on a drive today. she was listening to something on the radio and claiming that her music if far more avant-garde, and i am just a stick in the mud. i said i too have listened to music like that, only musicians with better skills. she didn't believe me. when we got back home, i showed her this and she was floored:

Re: showing my daughter good music
On a night just like this, in a place far away
He met with a girl in the spring
And something about him just turned her around
As though she were caught on a string
And being so young they held on to each other
To see what the moment might bring
He loved her then in a secretive way
Not showing his care or his need
She stayed beside him and looked to the day
He would somehow begin to be free
In the chill of the night she would hold him and say
This is how they always should be
Rocks in the ocean, waves on the sea
Keep it in mind,
If love comes unsatisfied, don't forget me
Don't forget me
And so he come to depend on her more
Though the lesson was still to be learned,
Taking for granted the gift that she gave
As though it were something he'd earned
And she for her part growing slowly away
From a love that was never returned
Then came the day that he never foresaw
When he woke to find she was gone
He followed her then to the ends of the world
To tell her how much he'd been wrong
But the more he called her, the more she was lost
Leaving only the words of her song
Rocks in the ocean, waves on the sea
Keep it in mind,
If love comes unsatisfied, don't forget me
Don't forget me
He still listens out for her foot on the stair
As he looks for her down through the years
And the friends that he had have all left one by one
For their words weren't reaching his ears
He chooses instead now to wander alone
To a song that only he hears
Rocks in the ocean, waves on the sea
Keep it in mind,
If love comes unsatisfied, don't forget me
Don't forget me

Really. I din't know this.. So your thatha is also called as thamizh thatha.. That explains a lot about your interest in Tamil. Happy birthday to him.

he is a grand uncle PS, i.e. my father's uncle. not thatha in a direct sense, but very revered in the extended family.

Long time ago I have read his autobiography ... En Sarithiram ... a fascinating book depicting everyday life in those times of colonial South India in simple elegant Thamizh. Amazing man! Glad to know he is your great grand uncle.

a man with one passion who accomplished so much and did so much to ensure that our ancient literature is not consigned to the dustbin of history. i am sure in MD's eyes he would have no value as a human being.

Yes, his life work has enriched Thamizh. To know that even Bharathiyar wrote a poem in recognition of his contribution to Tamil literature is a shining example of the great scholar and researcher that he was.
I don't think MD would see no value in such a person because he himself is very particular in the way he crafts his sentences and uses words from his extensive vocabulary. Without passion for a language, this would not be possible IMO.
