My two cents. The anonymous online forum purpose is to allow people to express their feelings without fearing negative consequences of other peoples judgement. Interesting discussions can take place when we can cut out the need to polish feelings to not hurt others feelings. I am talking about frank discussion rather than filthy language.
why would people on a forum like this want to know and meet other posters? Don't we all have our own lives and friends? We already know a lot of information about who lives where and who speaks what language. What is the point of using real names?

there is enormous fun in snatching another poster's lungi in a crowded gathering and then running away while brandishing it in the air like a trophy. it's fun to see the lungi-less poster shout and run naked after him.

I don't buy this "interesting" discussions can take place only if it is based on repetitious sarcasm, cynicism and insulting others. *It is boring and has the exact opposite effect on most people.

*Sure.. there is absolutely NO need to meet anyone we interact with on line..having said that it is really bizarre to be "detached" to the point (bordering on sociopathic) that we have absolutely NO value for the people who touch our lives for years and years..and "use" them to have so called discussions and never want to meet them - as if they are not worth it.

I broke my policy of meeting no suchers in, I think 2010 or was it 2011... have met 4 suchers so far. Will definitely meet M when she comes this way. Will 'want' to meet Max if someone in fam gets into [removed by admin], but will try to starve and tan myself before that . Let's see...

Completely agree with you TBT since Sulekha CH, but snipe, snide and sarcasm are the only flavors that worked most on Sulekha and now on SuCH. No discussions. Just hit and run.
