Univ of Il, Urbana-Champaign
For undergrad in Computer Engineering. Good school or not? Is it worth spending out-of-state tuition for that? Your inputs will be greatly appreciated. TIA.

Congrats.
Just curious why most desi kids prefer the out of state colleges? I have seen quite a few desi kids seek out of state colleges though there are good schools available in their home state/city. Also have seen Tambram kids go to local colleges/schools and commute from home too (no college/hostel stay).

Re: Univ of Il, Urbana-Champaign
from what i've heard and seen in reports, one of the best in the u.s. for undergrad education in engineering; in the top four to six. i have no info about the computer engineering major.nenu wrote:For undergrad in Computer Engineering. for more info, see the ranking published by u.s. news and world report; browse the collegeconfidential web site.
u of i, u-c is not an institute of technology; that's good in my eyes, because it would have the resources for a student's pursuit of a wider range of interests.

I know their Electrical Engineering program is rated among the best in the country. Don't know much about their Computer Engg, however.

Re: Univ of Il, Urbana-Champaign
In general, it's a very good University.
*In my view, financial affordability is always a consideration. If it's a non-issue and affordable (depending on your own family situation and the financial package offered), don't have to worry at all.
If it is something you have to think about - loans and other assistance, would compare with other Univs, before making the decision.

Was looking up rankings and tuition:
http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/engineering-doctorate
*The ofs tuition for Univ of Il U-Ch seems quite reasonable at $28,570 (2012-13)
Good luck to your son!

Cool. Congrats!
I had got into this for masters. But decided to chose the one in NY, as K was here.

"choose," not "chose." the two words are pronounced differently.Vidya Bagchi wrote:Cool. Congrats!

UIUC was in the news big time back then. Netscape, the IPO that made dot-com a household name, came out of the work of UIUC grad students (or post-docs) I believe.Vidya Bagchi wrote:Cool. Congrats!

It's ranked 4th in Computer Engineering in US. I was more focused on other universities and didn't care much about this one till now. I'm learning more about it today.
Being in the Honors program is an added bonus too, I guess.

Ranked in the top 5. Depends on what the alternatives are. Then you do an economic and professional return on your investment. Anything within top 50 or even top 100 is not a deal breaker for the kid.

oh...yeah...also Computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, network engineering, software engineering - there are several shades within EE.
So you want to be precise and exact in your analysis.

flute,
nj resident went to Columbia. any problem?
most kids work with their parents and school counselors to pick schools. the out of state tuition also ensures it is not just for fun. amounts involved are staggering .
i know of tambrams who went to faraway colleges for good and bad reasons.

Poorly formed question.
School selection is based on available choices, so no great insight can be drawn from this - your anecdotal evidence notwithstanding.
Anecdotally speaking, everything else being the same, going in-state is preferable for the wallet. You can form ill-informed hypotheses based on following categories:
1. Girls vs Boys, in terms of emotional attachment in families
2. Family Income levels
3. College Rankings among available choices
4. Desi Parenting vs. Chinese Parenting vs. White Bread parenting
5. Draw of party schools, potential drinking mates, exotic locations etc.
and then,
6. Tambrahm parenting methods and diligence in academics leading to greater choice both in-state and out-of-state
7. Desi parents' policies on 'don't ask don't tell'
8. General affordability by desi families to go anywhere they want
....
Go to town with it...

Re: Univ of Il, Urbana-Champaign
There is a Tamil guy from Sri Lanka who works with me. Both his daughter and son went to Thomas Jefferson high school in Virginia. That high school is ranked #1 in the country.
The girl got into MIT but the son could not. The son had no choice than to accept the offer from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The man is lamenting that MIT did not admit his son even though he had stellar grades and very high SAT scores. But this prestigious institution admitted his son's classmate with lower grades and test scores because the applicant was black.
I told him U of I is a good institution. But the man says being at MIT opens more opportunities to participate in important projects.
I should show the malcontent the pictures of slain Tamils in Jaffna, his birthplace. That will make him stop complaining.

All of the above are just hot air.
Kids in America want to move AWAY from their parents, as far away as possible - so do the ABCDs. Only the few Tambrahmi-parents controlled kid end up locally (or if they could not get anywhere).
Once decided to get out of the hellhole (called home), their choices narrow down to what their peers do. If their peers go to IVY, the the kid also likely to go. If they go to local state schools, your kid may go there as well. they rarely want to be alone at a school where they have no friends - peers or seniors.
P.S. Exceptions apply.

uppili ,
that general statement of getting far away from patents applies.to.most regular students. the big factor in those cases is affordability.
but the kids in discussion are the ones who can get into ivy leagues or top state schools. for them choices are limited by subject and college acceptance. i have seen parents, kids, and counsellors working together to get the best school/subject.

Most regular students.... Yes. Thank you.
Most Desis would not send their kids to local (stop) state schools if they got admission to IVY Leagues. Such kids are likely to come from upper middle class desi families and they WILL be sent.
Regarding subjects, most schools allow them to SHIFT majors. If their GPA is good in Freshman and Sophomore, the kids can claim a change of interest and readily and easily shift - yes, even in IVY leagues. So that is not even an issue and most school counselors dont sweat over it. For them it is all about how many of their kids got into IVY leagues and TOP state schools (Berkeley, GT, UT, Urbana, UMich, UWisc, etc..)
