Did she have to ruin another woman's life? - Part two
Meena did not say anything. In fact, she could not.
Vijaya joined them to congratulate Ram.
After a few minutes, both the women left.
On the way, Meena confided in her roommate what Ram told her. Vijaya was also her close friend.
Vijaya was baffled. She could not hide her irritation at Ram. "Why on earth he told you this now? After having gotten married a week ago? What is wrong with him? I did not realize Ram was so stupid."
Next day, Vijaya realized something was not alright with Meena. Her eyes were red and swollen. And she started crying inconsolably. "Vijaya, Ram is the one I am going to spend the rest of my life with. In my mind, he is my husband."
"Are you crazy? The guy got married to girl in Madras last week. That idiot should not have left her there. Otherwise he would not have told you this nonsense if his wife was there yesterday. Don't you see how stupid Ram is?" Vijaya tried to ram some sense into Meena's head.
She could not be too much bothered with Meena'a current crisis. Had to get that Ph.D in BioChemistry by next year. Back to monitoring the experiment she was conducting at her lab.
For the next few days, she noticed something. Meena was not at the apartment most of the time. She was not sharing her chores nor help make dinner.
Then Vijaya saw something that made her furious. Meena was seen everywhere on the campus with Ram. What is going on here?
She had to confront Meena. And she did.
Meena came out clean. "Yes. Ram and I have decided to get married next month. We are made for each other. Even GOD cannot separate us."
"What about his current wife? What is he going to do." Vijaya Asked.
"Well. He has not told her yet. She is coming in two weeks. We both will talk to her. We will apologize. She will understand."
"What do you mean?" Vijaya was puzzled.
"Ram's marriage to that girl was an arranged one. They really did not love each other. But we love each other. Also Ram told me that he did not have sex with her at all." Meena was sobbing while she said that.
Vijaya figured out that any kind of attempt by her to make Meena see reason is going to be futile.
This news spread like wildfire in the local desi community. Almost everyone shunned Ram and Meena.
The bride came. She landed at the Chicago airport with hopes, dreams and aspirations for her new life in the new world. She was looking forward to going on trips to Niagra falls with her husband, have kids and take them to Disney land and what not.
Ram waiting for her with a glum look on his face. There was not much conversation on the way home.
Words fail me to describe the agony, the emotional trauma which was inflicted on this poor innocent girl the next few weeks.
Ram's parents pleaded with him over the phone to come back to India, stick to his original marriage and let things cool down.
But he went ahead anyway. Got his marriage annulled. Gave his 'frst wife' some money to go to school in America.
Meena and Ram are married now. They have no contact with any of their friends from the graduate school days.
I wonder what these two feel in their hearts of hearts. Like fools I suppose.
I wonder what Meena thinks about having ruined another woman's life.
I wonder whether Meena sleeps well at night.
Vijaya joined them to congratulate Ram.

Re: Did she have to ruin another woman's life? - Part two
he never slept with first wife. there was no love between the two. and he gave her money to go to school in america.
as long as the two are still happily married and in love, i don't see much issue anywhere.
the only argument could have been, to not even let the wife come to america. to let her stay in india itself (have seen this happen to a neighbor of mine - she remarried eventually, to a guy her own in-laws found). but if she is thriving in america, all the more better for her. no?

Am a bit confused. In part 1 u said Meena told Ram she was interested in him. In part 2 u sayoing Meena told Vijaya that Ram was interested in Meena.
A small derailment ?
Here is Part 3:
The bride finished her MS with much financial hardship, went to MIT to finish her PhD, married a "broad-minded" Iyer boy with a MD from Harvard. She moved up the professional ladder and now Se. VP of a Major MNC making computer hardware.
Ram happened to meet his Ex at a Desi party accidentally. Ex came to know that Ram was recently laid off and encouraged him to apply to her company. Ram with all misty eyes thanked her with all his heart.
Meena was watching all this from a corner munching her Masal vadai...

Where did I say in Part I that?
In fact, it was Ram who told Meena that he had been interested in her.

Saamiyyar,
I have copied and pasted the relevant part from part1
Ram saw her, walked slowly towards her.
Meena congratulated him. Asked him what her wife was doing, where she was from ...
They talked for a while.
Then he said "Actually, I was interested in you."
It was thunderbolt.
For all her beauty, intelligence and success, Meena had never expected this to happen because it had not happened so far. But she wanted it badly to happen. She was always waiting for the moment for some man to tell her "I like you and I want you."

okiee....you could hv changed the dialogue as I wrote and make Meena - the Mohini - the evil villi.
Anyway if Ram/Meena son were to date/marry the ex's daughter will it violate the Iceland APPs?
