Do you ever misspell words?
ask marilyn Marilyn vos Savant December 18, 2010
K.C. of Atlanta, Georgia, writes:
Marilyn: Do you ever misspell words? Can a genius be a poor speller?
Marilyn responds:
I hardly ever misspell a word that is in my speaking, writing, or reading vocabulary. If I'm unsure of the spelling of an unusual word--say, a scientific term--I always know that, so I look up the word before I write it down. I don't misspell esoteric words.
But that's just me. Plenty of intelligent people aren't good spellers for one reason or another. However, if a person is an extremely good speller (not counting people who study spelling, such as spelling bee contestants), that person is likely to be quite intelligent.

Let's see..
An extremely good speller is likely to be quite intelligent, OTOH, many intelligent people aren't necessarily good spellers.

Re: Do you ever misspell words?
I am guilty of looking down on other bad spellers:
1.a. Generic bad spellers - they just make careless spelling errors, I get irritated.
1.b. Inconsistent but generic bad spellers - they use the same word twice in a paragraph, spelling it right once and wrong the other time, in that case, I classify them as 'not dependable'.
2. Selective bad spellers - they err with esoteric words, I mildly chuckle and classify as 'wannabes'.
Of course, the above rubric applies on a points system - 3 strikes and you are out.

I never mispell any word ever. Dispel that thought. What(ever) I type is the the right spelling....and that solves that problem for me.

All spelling and grammar tell you is whether a person is book smart. It doesn't say much about their street smarts or their EQ.

All squares are also rectangles. But all rectangles are not squares.
