Tuesday Trivia: April 30, 2013 Empty Tuesday Trivia: April 30, 2013

Post by Idéfix Tue Apr 30, 2013 2:20 pm

1. This apolitical titular position in a city’s government was held by Dilip Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Sunil Gavaskar, and Vijaypat Singhania. The term of office is one year. The holder of the office is an officer of the High Court based in that city, and nominally runs the department that is responsible for carrying out the Court’s orders, including summoning people and attaching and auctioning property. A more prominent duty is receiving foreign dignitaries at the airport. What is the position?

2. In Indian politics, the term South Block is used to refer to the Union Ministry of External Affairs. Why? And the term North Block is used for which ministry?

3. This ancient term originally meant “administration,” and it was used for an administrative unit at the intermediate level of government within the Roman Empire. Each of these units aggregated several provinces, and several neighboring units together formed a praetorian prefecture. An official called the vicarius was appointed to oversee each of these administrative units. The smallest such unit was Britannia, composed of four provinces. What is this term?

4. This mural painting covers the back wall of the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie (Holy Mary of Grace) in Milan. It was painted between the years 1495 and 1498, and depicts a scene from the Gospel of John, 13:21. It is believed to have been commissioned by Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan. The mural started to flake within 20 years, and by the time it was 70 years old, it was described as “ruined” with figures in it unrecognizable. In 1652, a doorway was cut right through the unrecognizable picture, and then bricked up. The painting was vandalized by anti-clerical French revolutionary troops in 1796. The refectory was bombed during World War II. The latest restoration effort took 21 years and the mural opened to the public in 1999. Name the mural and the painter.

5. He was the first sultan of Egypt and Syria, and he is the most famous man of Kurdish descent in history. He was born in Tikrit, in more recent times the stronghold of Saddam Hussein. The picture below shows a coin with his image on it. He is best remembered for repelling western European forces, and acquired a reputation for chivalry. Although he was a powerful ruler, he is said to have died a poor man after giving his wealth away to those in need. He could not afford a tomb or a funeral, and centuries later Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany bought a marble sarcophagus for his tomb in Damascus. Name this ruler.

6. This novel, published in 1951, has an opening sentence that ends with the words: “… and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don’t feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth.” The novel is listed as one of the best of the 20th century. Over 65 million copies have been sold, and each year several hundreds of thousands more are sold. In 2009, the author sued to stop the sale of an unauthorized sequel. What is the novel and who is its author?

7. The song As Time Goes By was written by Herman Hupfield in 1931 for a Broadway musical, and faded away soon after. It attained great fame in 1942, when it was performed by a minor character in a Hollywood movie. The song was the subject of one of the most famous movie lines ever. It is now rated second among the American Film Institute’s list of all-time best songs in film. Warner Brothers, which produced the film, now uses the chorus to this song as the fanfare accompanies their logo as the opening credits roll for its movies. What is the movie, and what is the famous line that references this song?

8. Leonardo Pisanno Bigallo of Pisa is credited with introducing Modus Indorum (“the Indian method,” or the Indian numeral system) to Europe, through his 1202 CE book Liber Abaci (“book of calculations”). Leonardo’s father worked at a trading post near Algiers in North Africa, and that is where Leonardo learned about the Indian number system from the Arabs there. The book also contained a number sequence that Indians had developed several centuries earlier for use in Sanskrit chhandas (prosody). It is a good bet that you have heard of Leonardo, but by a different name – what is that name? What is Leonardo now best remembered for?

9. James Watson and Francis Crick are famous for discovering the structure of the DNA in 1953, and went on to win a Nobel prize. In the months before their discovery, they were engaged in a furious race with an American scientist, who they were concerned would beat them to the answer. This American scientist, whom Crick called “the father of molecular biology,” went on to win two Nobel prizes in the next ten years, and in his later life he popularized the use of vitamin C. He is one of just two 20th century figures to make New Scientist’s list of the twenty greatest scientists of history (the other is Albert Einstein). Name this scientist.

10. The picture below is a satellite image of a geographical feature that is known in the local language as Mosi-oa-Tunya (“the smoke that thunders”). It forms the border between two countries, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. UNESCO recognizes two names for the site: the local one mentioned before, and a colonial name that is better known. What is the colonial name of this geographical feature?

The line is "play it, Sam," the "it" being this song. "Play it again, Sam" is a misquote of the line.

Here is an update... just one question remains.

Hint: The refectory is the dining hall of a monastery.

Hint: The refectory is the dining hall of a monastery.
