Have you ever thought about the poor dogs and the suffering and pain they are subjected to?
Many of the dogs have died out of exhaustion.
This is cruelty sport. It should be banned.
What is there to admire about it?

i am not convinced it is cruelty. these dogs love to race. they are born athletes. we spent some time in the company of a team of dogs that race routinely. they are well cared for and live for the race. they are amazing animals.

in any endeavor in life there will be scumbags. does that mean we need to stop living life? do we need to stop investing because we know there are thieves on wall street? do we need to ban cycling races because we know there are individuals like lance armstrong? should we stop all cricket because some indians cheat at cricket? should we stop breeding all dogs because there are people like michael vick?

Re: an amazing race
Sled dog breeds such as huskies, malamutes, eskimos, samoyeds, greenlands and chinooks (even st bernards and newfoundlands) were all bred for centuries to transport people and goods in icy conditions. Even in Iditarod races the mushers take great care of their dogs, their prized possessions.
Actually if you watch shows such as The Dog Whisperer you'll find that these breeds still require a lot of exercise with loads to carry or else they become too bored and fat developing all sorts of behavioural issues. Rigorously exercising these dogs with weights is not animal cruelty. Not exercising them properly might be.
With the advent of snow mobiles, these breeds are being used less and less for transportation and consequently their numbers are dwindling.
If you go purely by animal rights, you'd see a depletion of camels, horses and dogs that are not otherwise used for human consumption. Their existence will go the way of lions, tigers and elephants.

Re: an amazing race
this is an entirely unnecessary sport. the sled should be pulled by sixteen sentient human beings, eight men and eight women.
