Stocks I recommend
I recommend buying Novagold (NG) at current prices. I just bought it at $8.80. I used to own this stock. I had bought it at $6.~ and sold it at $12 last year. It went up to $14 or so.
Fundamentals are good. At $8.80, this stock has a good entry point.
Note to my hecklers: I'm not a perma-bear. I buy few stocks and buy them at good entry points. My goal is to buy only when the risk/reward ration is skewed in my favor.
Mind you...this stock could still go further down in case there is a liquidity crisis. Mining companies are highly leveraged so there is a possibility that they would not be able to rollover their debt in case there is credit dislocation. But I think this company is being backed by some very powerful people / deep pockets.

Re: Stocks I recommend
I have bought the above stocks / cefs/ etfs at stated prices....
Another disclaimer: I might become a seller if there is some crazy announcement from a crazy central banker.
At this point, my prediction is next week Bernanke is going to make some kind of market-goosing announcement. It won't be QE3, but maybe capping of the 2-year treasury yield. This will surely fire up the gold market.
Right now, gold miners have fallen disproportionately in anticipation of liquidity issues and commodity price drop. NG took a hit because it gets a lot of it's revenue from copper and copper prices took a hit. But I think a lot of the negative news has been priced in and the risk/reward favors buying NG.

Re: Stocks I recommend
MTU at $4.47 is another pretty good entry point. Support is very good at $4.25. So downside is limited and upside is good for the next 6 months.

She may be right about some munis defaulting...but I definitely don't agree with the impact of the default.
She is an alarmist.....eager to call 911 at any sign of a break-in. First of all, muni defaults are rare. Secondly, muni defaults don't mean that you will lose principal or interest payments. At worst, the muni bond would be restructured and the duration would be extended with a higher interest payment. The odds of losing principal is virtually nil.

Nice spike today....this should continue for a while. I think NG has started a technical uptrend.

That depends on your investment horizon. It's a good short-term trade exit. But it's still has a lot of room to grow in the long term. I think this one's a keeper.

Yes...was close but didn't close. But that's ok. This stock is very volatile. Would be concerned if it goes below say $8.25
Re: Stocks I recommend
NLY at $17.40 (Annaly Capital Management)
Also, sold NG (Novagold) at $10.65 today.

IMO, if the stock is at its lows and the market is not, there is usually a good reason for it. Buy a srock which is on its way up, not down - that is my philosophy.kinnera wrote:WM. A blue chip company on sale. It's below 52 wk low. Gives good dividends too. Strong company.

Expected earnings were low for this quarter ($.04). That's why. It won't be the forever. Fundamentals are good.

Also,
NLY suddenly dipped to $ 14.60 last friday. And how long can it give a 15% dividend?

The 15% dividend is sustainable. The CEO is brilliant. Read the earnings call transcript. http://seekingalpha.com/article/283916-annaly-capital-management-s-ceo-discusses-q2-2011-results-earnings-call-transcript?source=yahoo
The portfolio may seem esoteric, but if you have the patience to peel the layers, you will see that they have put an extremely fine dividend engine in place. Most of the portfolio consists of AAA mortgage backed securities backed by the full faith of the US govt. They get high returns by rolling short term debt. As long as the yield curve remains as steep as it is, which is as far as the eye can see at this point in time imho, the dividends remain intact. Of course, there are other risks, like tax changes, accounting changes, etc etc.
WM seems like a good pick....worth checking out.
Re: Stocks I recommend
What do you think abt CIM, the sister corp of NLY. Riskier, but is it worth the risk?

You mean, it's not worth the risk, don't buy the stock? NLY is a better option?

Re: Stocks I recommend
MHLD (Maiden Holdings) at anything below $8. If fact, it is a good time to start cost averaging a position. Worth holding on to this small company for a double bagger.
