The Emperor of all maladies: A biography of cancer by Siddartha Mukherjee - quite fascinating, so far. The author is very articulate and impressive - watched an interview with him recently.

Madhouse (True stories of the inmates of hostel 4, IIT-B)

The latter was gifted to me by an IITB alumnus. I have to read it for the sake of politeness. I thought it was a rather odd gift. Maybe I should send it to Uppili after I am done with it.

** i looked him up on youtube, he was promoting his book. maybe cuz of my background i found it to be moving at a snail's speed. this going back and looking up some historical case reports is something i'd expect some secretary to do, also disappoitning is the title of the book, a riff on the interpreter of maladies by the chubby soporific bengali women. maybe all this holds some appeal to the average lay person but i find that difficult to believe. the exciting stuff in medicine to me seems to be stuff like judah folkman noticing the growth of fresh new blood vessels at a particular site and thus identifying angiogenesis factor or the use of antibodies in the treatment of cancer. anyway, oncologists are really boring people.

This is what he says in the "Author's Note" about the title of the book

In the end, cancer truly emerges, as a nineteenth-century surgeon once wrote in a book's frontispiece, as "the emperor of all maladies, the king of terrors".
