the rewards of teaching are more immediate than research. i like it for that reason. this is especially important when one is going through dry patches in research which are inevitable in anyone's career. it's almost like a pick-me-up. teaching only becomes a chore when one is teaching a subject that one doesn't care for much. i don't believe it is possible to teach well and not care about teaching at the same time. at least not over a significantly long period of time.
