please lose your silly pipe dreams and watch the video. he has something specifically to say to folks like you. he talks about a sri lankan MP who apparently warned his govt when they were making a one language sinhala only policy -- he told them they had a choice between one language, two nations and two languages, one nation and that they had better pick wisely. he said one of the many reasons india has succeeded in staying together as one nation is that they abandoned the hindi pushing. he talks about many many other things, but i thought this is something that may be of interest you.

India will continue to be multi-lingual after the creation of a united states of south asia. after all, the first language of the people of bangladesh is bengali and with respect to Pak the first language of the people is sindhi, punjabi, balochi, multani, etc. Guha is sensible on many issues but i am not going to blindly swallow whatever he says.

there is a saying in tamil which is stated in the form of a question -- nayai adippAnEn, peeyai sumaippAnEn? why beat the dog, and why carry the burden of the resulting shit? most indians have no desire to form any such united states of south asia. in particular they have no interest in doing bhai bhai with pakistan.

you are talking about the present. i am talking about 40-50 years into the future. Also, we can include Sri Lanka too in this federation.

By united states of South Asia, do you mean the united "Caliphate" where green flags fly on Red fort while a red river flows across South Asia? Quite a sikular dream! However, all the secular talk of monomaniacs will evaporate when they become the majority. You and your friends will see what is it to be a secular kafir in a caliphate.

And why would PakiSatan want a secular state with Hindoos? Didn't Jinnah create secular PakiSatan to escape from the domination of Hindoo secularists?

i hate the word south asian like the plague because it throws indians into a mix with a group of people whose values are so far away from my own. i prefer to be called an indian.

it is possible that after reunification the reunited entity will continue to be called India. like what happened after east germany and west germany reunited. Then the people will all continue to be called Indians.

What about the formation of the European Union? Economic unity is usually a precursor to political unity.

have you been living in a cave perhaps? the idea of the european union is an utter failure. germany has to bail out the riffraff. do you want india to be bailing out its riffraff neighbors rather than fixing its problems?

whether the european failure has been a failure or not can only be ascertained after a few decades. for long term gains, sometimes short term sacrifices have to be made.

if the EU would have been an utter failure it would have broken up and individual countries would have gone their own way. but that has not happened.

that's because the pain of doing so now is greater than the pain of staying together. however both scenarios in hindsight are far more painful than never having gotten together.

India is large enough and diverse enough. We have it hard enough already; we don't need Swat valley and a border with Afghanistan to deal with.

Afghanistan may also wish to join the Indian union. Btw, don't forget that I am talking of a scenario 40-50 years from now and not today.

I just finished watching the lecture. He covered a lot of the same themes at the end of his book India after Gandhi, but it was illuminating to hear him talk about the issues.

Re: ten reasons why india will not and must not....
Guha's lecture only reinforced some of my own observations, particularly Congress having become a family firm from the late 60's. Nepocracy has really been detrimental to governance. Guha is correct about such a scenario in DMK as well.
Other issues such as corruption at all levels including police and justice, air and water pollution, poor sanitation and health hazards, rising cost of living and the volume below the poverty line, failing standards in public education and healthcare etc are not being properly addressed.
The last thing one needs to worry about is India being a super power. Guha himself doesn't see a need for it.
