Re: FRIDAY CRYPTICS 8/16/13
nice set, but the cluing on #12 is a bit off if you'll take a bit of criticism. the "and" put me off. i know it makes for a sharper sounding clue, but really this is more accurately clued as: wear, tear about target.goodcitizn wrote:Correct.bw wrote:

RAIMENT (AIM inside RENT)
sounds sexier the way you wrote it, but easier to parse and more accurate without the and.

Criticism accepted. Sometimes you set the clue to throw off a little. Without the "and" it would have been easy to crack.MaxEntropy_Man wrote:nice set, but the cluing on #12 is a bit off if you'll take a bit of criticism. the "and" put me off. i know it makes for a sharper sounding clue, but really this is more accurately clued as: wear, tear about target.goodcitizn wrote:Correct.bw wrote:

Last 2 clues with hints:
5. Infusing rare gas into rare metals is horrendous [5] Horrendous also means dreadful.
11. Story about the mafiaso is inoffensive [10] Means peaceable. Think legally.

You're welcome, Halcy. In the old Sulekha we used to get sets where there'd be omission of a letter or something. Can't remember but was fun. Do you recall? I'd like to set one up like that in the future. Also, any other variations?bw wrote:thanks for a nice set, GC.

Re: FRIDAY CRYPTICS 8/16/13
i've been trying some old puzzles from various english papers. some of these english setters are really good, and some are really really obscure and weird. try this for example:
Agreeable company consumes port (5)
even after i looked up the answer, i had trouble parsing it. i did parse it eventually, but there is no way i'm getting that in any straightforward way. moral of the story - avoid puzzles by this setter.
