Same rule as ever: no internet searches please!

1. R.K. Narayan wrote his best-known work The Guide in 1956 on a visit to the United States. It was his first trip outside India, funded by a Rockefeller Fellowship. He wrote the book while living in a university town about which he wrote: “I have lived under the illusion that I would never have to leave [this town]. All the friends I seem to have in the world seem to be gathered there.” Name the town.

2. This company employs around 30 people, and its service is used by over 60 million Americans each month. The service began as an email distribution of events around the San Francisco Bay Area, and the first web interface was launched in 1996. Unlike most Silicon Valley startups, this company chose not to go public. In its job ads, the company promises job seekers “a workplace free of VCs, MBAs, sales, marketing, biz dev, endless meetings.” Name this company that operates in 700 cities in 50 countries around the world.

3. He was born in the Bhopal princely state, and was named Chandra Mohan Jain. But he is now remembered by other names. He was arrested for immigration fraud in the US and was deported as part of a plea bargain. He was known for his fondness for Rolls Royce cars; at one time there was a fleet of 90 at his service with plans to buy a total of 365, one for each day of the year. The final name he took is the Japanese word for Buddhist monk or high priest, originally derived from the Sanskrit word upAdhyAya for teacher. Name him.

4. Gobind Behari Lal was a member of the Ghadar Party. Jhumpa Lahiri is an acclaimed Indian American writer. Geeta Anand is a well-known journalist and author. Siddhartha Mukherjee is a physician and author. What is common to these four Americans of Indian descent?

5. The photograph below shows a prominent political leader in shackles during India’s Emergency in 1976. The photograph was picked up by foreign media including Time magazine, and became a symbol of a country in chains. The politician in the picture went on to serve as the union minister for industry, railways, and defense under different prime ministers. He speaks Konkani, Tulu, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam, and Marathi, and was elected five times to the Lok Sabha from the Muzaffarpur constituency in Bihar. Name him.

6. Eight Indian companies feature in Fortune magazine’s latest Global 500 list of the world’s largest companies by revenues. What is the highest-ranked Indian company on the list?

7. Lord Stanley of the Conservative Party was the first to hold this position. The Earl of Listowel was the last. The Viceroy of India was responsible to the person holding this position. What is this position in the British cabinet that had formal responsibility for the government of India?

8. The picture below shows four of ten sites involved in the first bioterror attack on US soil. They are located in the town of The Dalles, Oregon. The attack was part of a plan by a group to influence the outcome of the 1984 county elections. The perpetrators of the attack were identified a year later. Who was responsible for this attack?
Tuesday Trivia: August 27, 2013 Restau10

9. According to Wikipedia’s list of the world’s most popular websites, the only country-specific site in the global top-10 is the Chinese search engine Baidu at number 5. What is the most popular India-specific service? What is the global rank of this service? Choose one: (a) 11-15 (b) 16-20 (c) 21-25 (d) 26-30

10. This word is used to describe a period in the earth’s history from 200 million years ago to 145 million years ago. The word comes from the name of a subalpine mountain range to the north of the Alps that separates the Rhine and Rhone river valleys. The name of the mountain range is supposed to mean “forest.” This is easily the most well-known period of the geological timescale. Name it.
