Frauds like Cheran are the ones who produce movies about daughter of a rich man falling in love with a nice, decent boy who is poor. The rich man will be portrayed as evil who is a narrow minded bigot preventing his daughter from marrying the man she loves.

Now the reality is coming back to bite Cheran and his true colors come out.

It seems Damini probably got a quick lesson in reality ("love may not be sufficient to meet the worldly needs and comforts, e.g. good food and nice home etc.") after she initially could have chosen the poor boy-friend (Chandru) over rich father (Cheran). That might be the reason for her sudden turn around in the court and go with her father.

They worked her over for a month and at times of mental stress, it is easy to create a distorted reality and feed her and seed her with self-doubts. The father is a film director - the performance was a combination of Improv, Opportunistic and strategic negotiations, pure psychological stress and leveraging of connections, money and influence. Masterful outcome in the short-term. There are lessons in here for other Indian geographies.
