Tuesday Trivia: September 10, 2013
Here is a short set. Same rule as always: no googling please!
1. This common Indian word, present in all Indian languages, is etymologically related to the English word wit and the Latin word video. What is it?
2. JRR Tolkien made a name for himself as a writer, poet, and philologist. What was his day job?
3. In the Malay language, the word keling is used to refer to people of Indian origin. The word is now considered derogatory, and is rarely used. What is the origin of this word?
4. Buddhism has four holy places, all associated with the life of the Buddha. Name them.
5. It is now a small town of about 40,000 people. Jarasandha, one of Krishna’s adversaries in the Mahabharata, ruled from this town. It was the first capital of Magadha, until Ajatashatru moved the capital to Pataliputra in the 5th century BCE. Gautama Buddha liked spending time here, and the First Buddhist Council after his death was held in this city. The city is also important to Jains, as Mahavira lived here for fourteen years. The ancient name of the city means “home of kings.” Name the town.

Sarnath, Bodhgaya, and Kushinagar are correct. Nalanda (or Vaishali) is not. Think of the other place that is significant in the Buddha's life. Interestingly, Vaishali played the exact same role in the life of Mahavira.Huzefa Kapasi wrote:4. sarnath, bodh gaya, kushinagar and nalanda (or vaishali).
Correct.5. rajgir?

Bodhgaya and Sarnath are correct. Dharamshala is a place of Buddhist pilgrimage, but it is not one of the four holy places identified by the Buddha himself for pilgrimage.Kris wrote:4. Bodh gaya, sarnath, dharamsala,
No, it is Rajgir, known as Rajagriha in its heyday.Kris wrote:5. Ujjain? just a guess..

Re: Tuesday Trivia: September 10, 2013
Dharmashala (H.P.) had no association with Buddhism as a Buddhist holy place until the Indian Govt. recently (in early 1960s) gave political asylum to Dalai Lama (the Tibetan Buddhist leader) and his followers (Buddhists) in that place after they escaped from Tibet arriving in India under the threat and take over of Tibet by the Chinese in 1960-61. Dharamshala has many Shiva and Devi temples for a long time.Kris wrote:
