Back when I lived in Hyderabad, it was common for Hindu organizers of Vinayaka Chaviti celebrations to use themes from popular culture and from other religions. I saw this also with Durga Puja in Kolkata. In these things, there are two things that draw crowds and donations: size and creativity. So people come up with Jesus-Ganesh and Sachin-Ganesh.
