Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar, A man of great vision Empty Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar, A man of great vision

Half a century ago when I was an engineering student at Annamalai
University, there was no corruption or donation to offer for getting
admission anywhere in Tamil Nadu. We then used to hear that only for
MBBS course even a candidate with average marks can get admission in
Bangalore by paying donation of Rs 10,000. Now when Annamalai
University has grown by leaps & bounds, and money could be minted
perhaps in hundreds of crores, we cannot rule out a possibility that
there could be a fight on who can successfully grab that money. A
century ago when almost every Nawab & Raja was content with the
enjoyments of life, there was a simple person by name Raja Sir
Annamalai Chettiar who wished that the people of India get the best of
education and set up Annamalai University. Whatever is happening now
is really unfortunate. But on my part, when I pass by the statue of
our Raja at Annamalai Hall near Madras High Court, I salute him.

If anyone had gone to the campus of Annamalai University, am sure they would have been super impressed. An almost an american style campus just outside the small temple town of Chidambaram. The first private, full fledged University with beautiful walkways - lined with gigantic trees, and individual buildings for many departments and the fees same as that paid in government colleges.

The typical Indian mindset that anything good has to be run by government (opposite to the US mindset) kept Annamalai University status below the established Madras, Bangalore, and Bombay universities. IITs and IIMs came much later and hence dont even compare in history, tradition. Too sad that the University got politicised by MK and DMK in the late 60s and went downhill after that. There are several universities today started by groups with money on mind, but hopefully in 50 years and 2 generations later these would become good universities.

and you have a tunnel vision.

When a million people demand freedom it is a movement

when 100,000 people demand freedom, it is a struggle

When a single person demands freedom, he is a nutcase.
