COIMBATORE: A Jasmine and her friend Haseena Bhanu were thrilled about celebrating Diwali for the very first time in the Thajul Islam Hanafi Sunnath Mosque in Kuniamuthur on Saturday morning. Motorists on the Coimbatore-Palakkad road were pleasantly surprised to see bearded men in skull caps carrying trays of sweets, wishing them a happy Diwali outside the mosque.

"I enjoyed bursting crackers and sharing sweets. It would be nice if we could celebrate all festivals regardless of religion," said Sabeer Ali, a Class 9 student who participated in the celebrations.

Mosque committee members welcomed guests across religions to participate in the event. Around 20 people from various religious and voluntary organizations and senior police officials were invited. Given that the area is considered communally sensitive with incidents of temple desecration reported recently, the celebration reflects residents' desire to live in communal harmony.

"We have gathered here to exchange Diwali greetings and most importantly convey the message of communal harmony and peace," said AR Basheer Ahamed, President, Coimbatore district united Jamath.

The event was a joint initiative of various religious organizations and members of civil society under Universal Brotherhood Association, a voluntary organization in the city to promote communal harmony.

City based advocate, V Nandakumar, one of the main organizers, said it was the first time they were hosting Diwali celebrations in a city mosque.

First this is initiated by Nandakumar and his organization. Secondly, the fact that this is news and you have to post it proves it is such a rarity and hence should not be taken all too seriously.

the tamil sign says "iniya deepAvaLi nal vAzhthukkaL" and the english sign seems like it's been made by a southern indian desperate to provide oral lavation to northindian genitals.

maybe it's been made by the same people who write keral for kEraLA and balaji for venkatEswarA.

It is Deepavali in all SI languages and Diwali in most other Indian languages. There is no need to twist yourself into a knot over this, Il Professor-ai.
