technically he is an absconder, facing a warrant of arrest secured by the goa police, and thus his AB should be rejected. his lawyers plead: "They sought bail for him by saying that "He is not running away, will face the trial."" let's see... nice cat and mouse game.

5.22 pm: Tejpal arrested by Goa police Tarun Tejpal has been arrested by the Goa police at the airport. Tejpal landed at the Dabolim airport a few minutes ago and was arrested immediately. CNN-IBN reports that the Goa police is clearly acting on the expiration of the 2.30pm deadline by a Goa court. This means that the arguments underway in a Goa sessions court are irrelevant, as the Goa police can hold him for 24 hours. This is fairly unusual behavior for the police, the channel added. It is unclear as to where Tejpal is being taken, although some reports indicated that he was being escorted to the Goa sessions court.

But why all this jumping through hoops over AB? Why not just surrender to the Goa police, give a statement and then if they insist on detaining him despite the evident absence of any flight risk, apply for bail?

who likes being arrested? if you have the option of AB and the money, why not avail it? then there is also the question of spending one night in a lock up over being directly taken to jail (for custody) from court.

hearing adjourned till 10 am tomorrow -- interim relief to continue. see, he gets to sleep in a 5 star tonight 'cos of his application or else he would have been in lock-up overnight.

During today's session in court, the judge appeared to reject all major arguments offered by Mr Tejpal's lawyers as they petitioned for his bail. The judge also censured them naming the woman reporter who was allegedly raped. "Are you trying to malign her? We are not playing to the gallery. This is not a minor mistake," the judge said.

Mr Tejpal's lawyers said that the fact that the reporter attended parties at the annual Tehelka conference after the alleged sexual assault proves that the complaint is fabricated. The judge said her behaviour after the encounter "is irrelevant."

Bcz Fingeran was hoping to pull a fast one and buy time so that his PiSSer friends could save him SOMEHOW.

And, basically he is stupid but thinks he is some genius - a dangerous combo. His email apology, his statements about "just Bantering", consensual bantering, maligning the young thingie, and now this cat/mouse game are all proof of his stupidity.

absolutely agree. the bubble has burst. he is stupid with an inflated sense of self-worth (styles himself an artist -- wrote one useless novel). he has neither scruples nor a wee bit of art, it emerges now, as the skeletons stumble out of the closet. after his sting operations during NDA rule and after being stung back, he courted congress (as is now being slowly exposed). he rejected an article exposing illegal mining in goa by one of his journalists because goa was under congress rule then. the journalist published it in kafila and the scam hit the ceiling. i personally thought tehelka had a lot of integrity and i thought it was real, neutral, journalism. i followed it on twitter and read as much as i could. i'm as stupid as him. and then there is prufrock -- disgusting lechery and bohemianism .

Tarun Tejpal meets his legal team ahead of the court hearing on Saturday. He also met with his lawyer. As per news reports, the former Tehelka Editor met with his legal team at a 5 star hotel in Goa. The meeting is right now underway. Reportedly the entire team is working to chalk out a legal strategy for tomorrow's hearing.

he will not get AB. but that is not their primary concern at this stage. let's see...

What is tejpal's achievement in lfe? Catching bangaru laxman? A scheduled caste trade union who rose to become president of the then ruling party.
bangaru got entrapped for a one lakh bribery, a very small amount even by then standards.
tejpal 's next expose was coffin scam which was a political scam forced by partisan media.
Now bjp is using every trick in the book to get this.scumbag to rot in jail.
No one will shed any tears except for the partisan media under secular garb.

Tehelka's claim to fame was the match-fixing sting that felled Azharuddin and of course, Operation West End which brought down George Fernandes. Besides Bangaru Laxman, they had many smaller scoops incl exposing the Shri Ram Sene's mercenary nature.

The chaddis may rejoice at Tejpal's fall and Tehelka's imminent demise but personally, I believe we need bold journalism of that kind. Mainstream media is too pussy and beholden to the politicians to do anything worthwhile. Unfortunately, funding of such anti-establishment intiatives is always a challenge and eventually, the crusader has to dirty his hands (no different from how Kejriwal's journey from idealist-activist to pragmatic politician). Gulail and Cobrapost appear to be carrying on the Tehelka tradition. Let's see how long they last.

Not familiar with azharuddin deal.
Most investigative journis start as idealist but as they gain fame they reach cross roads. They got fame and they need money. Their ideology is either not strong or lure of fame and money is too strong.
Investigative reporting will survive because there are two sides to a political equation. One of them will need the inside story to come out.
Example: modi's snoopgate. Is it possible that this mess was a result of bjp internal leakage? Congress is just using it for political advantage.

here is my non expert comment: longer is good for tejpal. Easy decision is to refuse bail and be done with it. It is more difficult to justify letting this leech out.

true. it seems he will get yet another reprieve for tonight (and maybe tomorrow too). ODI ko test match bana diiya. so many people must have lost money on satta.

7.30 pm: Order on Tejpal’s bail plea still not out Over three hours have passed but the order on Tarun Tejpal’s anticipatory bail plea is still awaited even as the judge was to come out with her verdict at 4.30 pm today. Unconfirmed reports are doing the rounds that the judge is still typing her report or that she might choose to reserve her decision either for Sunday or Monday.

According to the latest new reports the anticipatory bail plea of Tarun Tejpal has been rejected. He will now be legally arrested anytime before which he will be taken for some medical examinations. This is a big blow to the entire Tejpal team.

So my not so expert commentary proved to be not so expert. So it is the slow type writer to blame.
but what is the big deal? It is not as if he is some naxalite who will be killed in a fake encounter? Goa police may ask him few questions if allowed by the judge. They cannot give him third degree or anything like that. He probably has the lawyers brief on what to say.
Even if he goes to jail it may have small impact. India needs several of these high profile cases to be decided in favor of girl before the arrogant male starts to see the tide turning.

I am interested only because I wanted to see the denouement after the hilarious attempts he made to escape prosecution... apology, recusing, shoma elevation and her hypocritical cover up, intimidation of the victim and then the hilarious posturing before cops on being summoned.

So we can clearly guess where there funding comes from. Going back their actions until now, it is a travesty of truth to call them anti-establishment.

after recovering from the NDA backlash (they unleashed the IT and CBI on him), more than a decade ago, tejpal had reminisced that he had read all of kafka as a young man but only understood his dramas only when the surreal witch hunt was underway. i had felt sorry for tehelka when the witch hunting was going on (shame shame BJP). but when i read this comment of his, i started subscribing to their paper edition and became a tehelka fan. i hope this time, in JC, tejpal understands kafka for the second time. you know, a good book requires multiple readings. every time you read it you will find a new meaning. in fact, you can keep quoting kafka ad nauseam -- that is the beauty of being kafka or a tejpal!
