In Rajasthan, the incumbent chief minister was Gehlot who had a relatively clean reputation. His problem? He was close to Sonia Gandhi and she trusted him (as did Rajiv) but he did not enjoy the absolute confidence of Rahul Gandhi. That honor went to a man called CP Joshi. In 2008, Joshi and Gehlot were the two top contenders for the CM post of Rajasthan when Cong won but Joshi lost his own seat (by one vote) and so Gehlot became CM. When Joshi started stirring dissent in the Rajasthan Congress, Gehlot requested Sonia to transfer him to Delhi and Joshi became a minister in the central govt.

Joshi then managed to get himself introduced to Rahul (through Sonia) and quickly won Rahul's confidence. So much so that Joshi was made the election in charge of Rajasthan in the recent assembly elections by Rahul. In the 199 assembly seats in Rajasthan, Joshi ensured that most of the seats were allotted to his men as he had the ultimate say in ticket distribution. Gehlot wanted those who had lost previous election(s) by more than 10,000 tickets not to be given a ticket again but Joshi disagreed since many of his own confidantes would have been excluded from ticket distribution if this rule would have been followed. Joshi also frequently humilated Gehlot and once asked Gehlot that for the sake of the party he should be prepared to consume poison.

This defeat is the defeat of Joshi and of Rahul; it is not the defeat of Gehlot. Some of the schemes launched by Gehlot like giving subsidized medicines to the poor need to be applauded. Gehlot also enjoyed a clean reputation. I am confident that Gehlot will return once again in Rajasthan; and i hope that we have seen the end of Joshi's manipulations.
