>>> I thought desi doctors with M.B.B.S who practice here in America are allowed to put M.D after their names. They are not awarded M.D degree by any university here.

How come this Patel guy got an M.D from University of Tennesssee after M.B.B.S from India?

Looking at his Education "Profile" he passed the USMLE. Once, passed the AMA considers his MBBS as "Equivalent" to the MD given here (why not equivalent to a DO? or why even give them a MD certificate? Australia and UK call these guys MBBS and nothing more).

The MBBS degree of 6 years is taken as equivalent to the MD education - The MBBS has to pass the Step 1 and 2 as the MDs from US would have completed. Then the MBBS are allowed to go into residency program. At the end of the residency program ALL (MBBS and MDs from US) take Step 3 before entering practice.

This dude is claiming the residency programs as MD which is not true. Different states follow different guidelines. In Kansas, the Indian fake MDs are listed by their MBBS degree and college on the state board website. The residency programs have monthly exams and other program - like tests and come under the auspices of a local medical school. That school awards these "fakies" the MD which they proudly show it up on the wall (Like this Tennessee dude).

Clearly the losers are the REAL MDs from India who "wasted" 3 years beyond their MBBS and are equated with these fakies. What irritates me is when these Fake MDs make fun of DOs as inferior docs.

Here is the glitch. Whenever a doc moves to another state, they have to submit all their "Transcripts" for approval (can take easily 6 months). Guess where these Fakies get their transcripts from ????? I N D I A - their MBBS mark sheets.

I know of a female MBBS who did her residency after passing USMLE. She was given the best resident award for all 3 years. But, she did not get a single offer from any group practice while the US MDs who did not do as well as the female got big offers. Here English is almost American (without the artificial pronunciation.)

99% of these fakies dont get much respect from the US MDs. Maria is an exception...and she went to CMC - which is ranked #2 in India and most US programs and DOCs know about AIIMS and CMC.

Answer for your question from the AMA website:

I am an IMG and my medical school does not award an MD degree. My degree is an MBBS. No one in the United States recognizes the MBBS degree. Can I use the initials "MD" after my name?

Before using MD after your name, check with your state licensing board. Many states permit a physician who is licensed to practice medicine in a state to use "MD", even if they earned an MBBS, MB ChB or other equivalent medical degree from an international medical school. Some states, however, require licensed physicians who earned a degree other than an MD to submit a second, separate application requesting permission to use "MD". If you need to use ‘MD’ in more than one state, check with each state’s medical board since policies between state boards can differ.

A recent case in Kansas illustrates the laws concerning use of MD. An oral surgeon who received a doctor of medicine (MD) degree from a medical school outside the U.S. had used the MD initials after his name in his professional practice. The Kansas Court of Appeals and the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts ruled that he could not use the MD initials in his practice because although he was licensed as an oral surgeon, he was not licensed to practice medicine.

To learn what types of medical degrees are offered in various countries, you can search the International Medical Education Directory (IMED). IMED lists and provides information on thousands of medical schools around the world and includes the title of the medical degree awarded in different countries. IMED is maintained by the Foundation for Advancement of Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) (This link will take you off the AMA Web site.
