if you're going to order the part and pay for labor consider this (you'll have to put in your own model # etc; forget OEM part; for a bimmer it's going to be super expensive):

If you have a Heat Pump (most likely) AND it is less than 10 yrs old, you may want to replace the A/C compressor. Will cost you around 1200 to 1500 (in NJ). don't get carried away by the ad. There is lot more involved in replacing a compressor and after that.
If it is just an air conditioner, better to change the air conditioner - should be around $2000. It will be more efficient and incur less utility bill. I would guess you will need a 3Ton machine.
Have fun (but, get ready to be without A/C for 2 days. (I assume you have a dual unit and can stay upstairs).

well...then $600+ is in the upper normal range. Should be able to get a reconditioned compressor for $400; junkyard compressor for $150. Forget the new one (no need).
The A/C needs to be checked and charged every year. The new freon is good only for 3 to 5 yrs max. reacts with washers and not as good as the old Freons.

I agree. I would go with the junkyard one if the car itself is a Toyota, Honda or some other not-so-expensive car.

Two ways: (1) you personally go to the junkyard and buy it there at the front counter - you tell them your car make / engine size, and they will get you one off the shelf.
(2) You find a repair shop who can call and get the part from the junkyard part delivered to their shop, and they would install that part your car.
Buyer beware - absolutely no guarantees if the part would last even a month. Some junkyards may guarantee the part will work once installed, but for how long? -- your luck.

one of my friends is a junkyard junkie and he visits the junkyard to fix all auto troubles. he knows what he wants and how to fix things. you have to be mechanically inclined and have the interest and the time to fiddle around with parts. he saves a lot of money but then he puts in quite a bit of weekend time and effort.

When your car has an accident and your insurance does not have new OEM coverage, they actually get the replacement stuff from junkyards from a car of similar year/mileage.
