The school pride.
Reminds me of a local boy from our High School (one of the 2 in our town) became a Major General in the Indian Army and was in action against Pakistan in the western sector during 1971. We gave a huge welcome with patriotic songs, fireworks etc., when he came back to visit the school.

btw, manipal inst. of technology, of manipal university, is a top ranked university here; though perhaps better known for its med. school.

Re: Nadella's school celebrates
manipal is a town in the state of karnataka. karnataka is south of vindhyas. hyderabad is a metropolitan city in the state of andhra pradesh. andhra pradesh too is in the south. both karnataka and andhra pradesh, quite coincidentally, are in india. did you not read all this in iit?Seva Lamberdar wrote:Hellsangel wrote:Seva Lamberdar wrote:Hellsangel wrote:Seva Lamberdar wrote:"Former Principal G. Mr. Nadella, who is credited with the success of Microsoft’s cloud and enterprise business, was never a topper in school, recalled his batchmate Phani Kondepudi, who was also his colleague in the US.
“In academics, he was always among the top 20, but never first or second. .."
>>>What is Kondepudi's problem?
Why bring that up?

If a guy from Harvard gets picked for Supreme Court, or if a guy from Virginia becomes President, they don't celebrate. Probably producing successful people is a matter of course for Univ of Chicago too.

Saamiyaar,
Why did Harvard ask Bil Gates to come and speak at their commencement ceremony? They gave him a honorary doctorate as well. Did they not recognize their successful alumnus that way?

While the schools "pat on their own backs" the Hindu editorial hits the mark (the last paragraph of it).
http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/editorial/nadella-at-the-top/article5657442.ece?ref=relatedNews
The government at the center (in India) is treading an exactly opposite path (we will keep these reservations going forever).

The Govt. is right. If there was no reservation, Staya would have joined some "regular" second rate college and he might have become a Sr. Code Collie at Infy. Bcz of the reservation, he could not get into the second rate Govt. colleges and ended up at third rate donation college at Moneypal, and ends up becoming the CEO.
Now you decide if reservation is good or bad.

I thought the editorial talks about meritocracy in careers after schooling. If someone is good can he get ahead in India based on performance alone? Other factors (other than the job performance) are weighed relatively less here than they are in India.

Every now and then, politicians have started raking up reservation in PRIVATE Industries. soon this will pick up steam.
Be positive and hopeful.

Yes we also need to know how many perverts and criminals are produced from the same school to get the real picture. Actually the popularity ratings of this have been dropping in the recent years, as it has only become like an elite club and not much academic excellence, etc. I don't have anything against anyone or any institution, but only looking for real picture...

People like you in and from India jumping up and down at this news (Nadella becoming a CEO in USA) shows their inferiority complex and lack of personal achievement. For me it's as important / significant as going to toilet to relieve myself, and that was the reason I did not waste time googling for CEOs in America from schools in Hyderabad (or any other place in India).
Got it?

There is an American woman who is in Africa trying to prevent the slaughter of elephants. IMO, she leads a successful life.

Not only that even the non-iitians with relatives who went to IIT seems to have problems too. I know one desi who got his MBA from a decent school in Australia. He and his wife came to visit us. He brought his BIL along and introduced him "This is my brother-in-law. He went to both IIT and IIM", he said proudly. is your pride in seeing your name on a placard on a dorm room in some iit a manifestation of your academic inferiority complex? why were you jumping then?
>>>I wonder why many fellows who went to IIT had to work this IIT stuff into conversations.
The IIT-IIM sucker was managing some code coolies for a desi bodyshop in New Jersey.
Ok. Got it. Nadella is not a success. IIT-IIM guy in desi body-shop in NJ is not a success. Preventing slaughter of elephants is a success.
>>>Where did I say IIT-IIM guy in desi body-shop in NJ is not a success?
All of them were successful in their own ways.
My bad. I didn't know that "sucker" is a synonym for success.

Got it?
How many ordinary people in the USA do you think would even care a bit (forget about having a lengthy discussion about it on the Internet) if some American guy became the head (CEO) of Wipro or InfoSys?
Probably none.
Re: Nadella's school celebrates
your analogy is wrong. wipro and infosys are not one of the biggest companies of the world. indians rightly don't when an indian becomes the CEO of a company in US the size of a wipro or infosys. but leave it for logic was never your favourite subject.Seva Lamberdar wrote:Brigadier HK (Retd) wrote:no i did not got it. when was i jumping up down? where where where? in which thread? in which post?Seva Lamberdar wrote:Brigadier HK (Retd) wrote:wow! that sounds like sevaji! sevaji was never a topper in school but him and satya, both, emerged top in different circles. satya in IT and sevaji in srutis and reservations.Rishi wrote:Mr. Nadella, who is credited with the success of Microsoft’s cloud and enterprise business, was never a topper in school

Re: Nadella's school celebrates
HPS is an elite school. You got to be a big shot to have your kid get into that school. Ordinary folks can't make it in. The students going to that school are very privileged. With such a background, it's natural for them to have high confidence levels, good communication skills, better opportunities, etc which facilitate their success.
Of course the school, the environment it provides, etc are top notch.
PS: Satya Nadella is the son of an IAS officer.

KInnera - 100% agree. HPS is considered an elite institution.
But HPS is not considered an elite merit based academic institution. Products of HPS were mid level in performance and used to seek help from top performers. Many of them ended up with their own enterprises. Privilege has its own benefits.

Re: Nadella's school celebrates
I was looking at the successful alumni of HPS in wiki. All the actors it mentions are the sons of actors, with a strong filmi background. All the politicians are the sons of politicians (including the CM Kiran Kumar Reddy, whose dad was a minister in the AP cabinet), successful businessmen are the sons of businessmen with a business background. So yeah, should their success be imparted to the school or their family background?truthbetold wrote:Kinnera wrote:HPS is an elite school.
