Re: You cannot ignore Digvijay Singh
Congress politics is a Byzantine maze in which one can easily get
lost. But the latest buzz in the party is the growing power of Digvijay
Singh who has emerged as chief political advisor to heir apparent Rahul
Gandhi. It was he, as head of the screening committee, who laid down the
rule denying tickets to relatives in the Karnataka assembly polls.
Again, it was he, as head of the screening committee for distribution of
tickets in Rajasthan, who decided to hand out nominations to at least
six relatives of retired Congress leaders. What Alva failed to see, when
she erupted in rage, was that all these relatives have had political
experience, unlike her son Nivedith, on whose behalf she had
unsuccessfully lobbied and whose only link to politics is the family
name. As the transition of power from mother to son begins within
the Congress, Alva probably feared for her future in the emerging new
dispensation. She had managed to establish a comfortable working
equation with Sonia Gandhi’s political advisor, Ahmed Patel, and got
herself several plum assignments as general secretary. A rival power
centre in Digvijay Singh was proving too complicated to handle. The
process of
effecting a generational change is never easy,
particularly in family-run concerns where loyalty has an unrealistic
premium value.

Re: You cannot ignore Digvijay Singh
If Singh seems to go out of his way to
reach out to the Congress’s Muslim constituency, he appears to have gone
all out against the RSS and the BJP. He says, “I was the first CM to
insist on both the Bajrang Dal and SIMI being banned. We want to end all
kinds of communalism. It is going to go the Pakistan way if
fundamentalism of any sort is allowed to go unchecked.”

Re: You cannot ignore Digvijay Singh
it is true that you cannot ignore him but then you cannot ignore controversy kings. and if congress thinks that his idiocy is benefiting them, good for them (and good luck to them). i am of the opinion that it will backfire. it has already put congress in embarrassing situations and at times congress has distanced itself from his slander.
last week, he had come to pune when he gave a clean chit to kalmadi (and chavan). now tell me, is this not an example of opening one's mouth without engaging brains? who is pigvijay singh to give them a clean chit? who is going to take such a loose cannon seriously?

Re: You cannot ignore Digvijay Singh
I had heard Digvijaya Singh was a very good administrator and his two terms as CM in MP came in for all round praise (although with a fair share of corruption charges). But that was a decade back.
In recent years, all the man has done is shoot his mouth off, often - as in the case of the Bhatla house encounter or Bin Laden's death - very irresponsibly. I don't see how his rise to power within the Congress hierarchy is any achievement worthy of admiration. If anything, his holding on to his position despite his outrageous statements is a clear sign of the utter bankruptcy of talent in the party.

That party is run on the principle of "saat khoon maaf" as long as you pay obeisance to the Royal Family.Merlot Daruwala wrote:If anything, his holding on to his position despite his outrageous statements is a clear sign of the utter bankruptcy of talent in the party.

--> the kalmadi comment was certainly something i disapproved off. i suspect the party asked him to make this statement so that kalmadi does not spill the beans on other people whose hands are dirty with respect to the money made in the commonwealth games. The BJP had its fair share of corruption and so did the Third Front (Charvaka's favourites) when they were in power. Corruption is endemic in Indian politics and much as i disapprove of it i have to come to terms with it. It is not possible to conduct politics in India without being corrupt. After all a lot of money is required in organizational activities.
--> with respect to the osamaji comment, i personally think it was a slip of the tongue. it was made in a speech where he was slamming Osama and Pakistan. he makes the clarification here:
