Impact on Pakistan
Almost every article, news talkshows imply pakistani compliance with Osama - but, saying only it is unthinkable, impossible not to know, hard to believe etc...
Here is a cultural lesson for the White folks:
In the nosy Indian subcontinent, the entire street and neighborhood will be interested in knowing the proposed new owner of a housing plot - his caste, background, his work, status, and pay. Let alone when someone is building a big house over 1 full year with all the talkative construction workers. With housewarming celebration, neighborhood exchange of pleasantries during the month long Iftar parties etc..etc..
NO ONE CAN EVER LIVE IN SECRET WITHOUT INTERACTING OR UNKNOWN TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD FOR 6 YEARS - that too when most of the neighbors are (ex) military personnel in that military garrison.
Hope the US has the guts to take the whiplash and choke the Pakistanis. If not, the Taliban WILL take over Afghanistan AND Pakistan.
This is what my Dhrishti is telling me.

Re: Impact on Pakistan
On NPR's Morning Edition, it was not just an implication. People -- including a US Senator -- were saying openly that the Paki Army and ISI likely knew and were raising questions whether they were actively helping Osama hide. For Allah's sake, he was "hiding" in the Cantonment area. Pervez the Hypocrite was trying to paint a picture of one big, happy intelligence failure on both the American and Pakistani sides, but even he of the use-American-planes-to-evacuate-ISI-from-Kunduz fame didn't manage to sound sincere.

bin laden and pakistan
ofcourse everyone in the US knows that pakistan top military and ISI brass hid osama. but it's a delicate game of politics they have to wage. you think if pakistan ceases to be key strategically to them in that area, they wont be blowed up? some thought struck the great uppilanicus and the entire US intelligence and political apparatus cant reach the same conclusions? the hubris! there are a million considerations for status quo.

Re: Impact on Pakistan
a brigadier general ( i don't know if he was retd or not) from Pakistan was interviewed by BBC..he was of the impression that Al Qaeda hid him in Abad with help from ISI and Pak Administration. Then they ratted him out so that some other leader can take over Al Qaeda...OBL has become a liability for them which I agree.

Makes sense. Many suspected that he is in Pakistan and would be outed at some point.

Re: Impact on Pakistan
what is to be seen is what kind of action will be taken against Pakistan as past policies have failed clearly at a big loss to the US in money and lives.

Re: Impact on Pakistan
In the same BBC newshour GWB's chief of staff was interviewed and was asked if GWB's pressure on Mushy to join (the whole if you are not with us, you are against us) the coalition and Mushy's initial reluctance to join has resulted in this failure. Andrew Card dodged that question with a lot of hand waving.

Re: Impact on Pakistan
Here:
>> That will raise questions about the Pakistani government’s possible awareness of bin Laden’s location in recent years. But one of Panetta’s predecessors says this can work to U.S. advantage. “It opens up some opportunities for us with Pakistan,” says John McLaughlin, former deputy CIA chief. “They now should feel under some great pressure to be cooperative with us on the remaining issues,” like going after the Taliban elsewhere in the country. “It’s called leverage.”
The well-established attitude of the US govt. is back again wrt Pakistan. Expect pakistanis to plead ignorance, and if really under pressure, army to take over in a coup blaming Zardari and previous Mushy Govt. for all the hideous things. Then promise to work with the US on Afghanistan, extract money, and game will be played all over.

Re: Impact on Pakistan
I have no idea why the US thinks Pakistan is so indispensable. Everybody will now say, "Danger of nuclear weapons! Nuclear weapons!" The fact is that, the US used to treat Pakistan like its indispensable long before they had any viable nuclear bombs.
Whatever the failures of the Pakistanis might be, they are masters at relationship management.

The geographical location helps. Having a base in Pak gives you quick look over Iran/Afghan/china/India.

They are masters in threats and blackmailing and play on people'e fears. They got their independence that way and still live on that strategy.
The street thug cannot be tamed with peace offerings.

If the US keeps Afghanistan and India happy, they can do the same thing. More reliable and no need to become a hostage to Pakistanis. Also, break up pakistan and naturally the US will find a more dependable Punjabis or Kashmiris. India does nto want a break up of Pakistan due to the fear of Kashmir splitting away.

That fear is unfounded. A broken Pakistan and resulting mayhem might make Kashmiris want to be a stable India. OTOH, a broken Pakistan might mean more unauthorized refugees flowing into India like the Bangladeshis.
