funny what fluidity that term has. the same people who are extreme right wingers in india are happy to be "left leaning idiots" in the US, suddenly worrying about minority rights, and what gun toting people from the majority population are likely to do to minorities. wonder why that is.

yeah they are opportunist lefties. such folks usually proclaim supremacy by virtue of who they were born to, in india, but are bleeding hearts in the US that just cannot abide by the wrong being done to minorities. they usually have a lot of contempt for the equivalent chattel class in india. you have other forms of lefties: fashion lefties that assume such a posture coz it's fashionable in their circles to do so. also have global lefties that pursue left wing causes all over the world lefties of the world unite style, lefties when it's convenient as long as it doesnt effect my pocketbook type and finally those that like nothing but status quo in india but want change change change everywhere else. this type usually scours blogs for nitpicky articles and hypocrisy of the right is a big deal for them. they are usually the type that miss the forest for trees.

Ideologically, there is a huge difference between the american/european leftists, and the fake and confused left leaning desi idiots (both in india and US). Most western leftists are very much into eastern religions/mysticism. They are against the dogmatic and institutionalized Abrahamic faiths, but lean more towards the spiritual aspects of the eastern religions. Most of them are not a-religious or atheists. They are more spiritual, not religious.They are into meditation, yoga, maybe vegetarianism, universal brotherhood, peace and stuff. Most of them lean towards buddhism, hinduism/adviata, taoism, sufism, modern christianity (interpretation of the bible more on the lines of eastern thought) and all. They are for gun control and are against wars.

Desi leftists are opposite. They believe that anything anti-hindu is leftist. The more you hate and talk against hinduism, the more leftist you are. Also the more you support the minorities (muslims, even terrorists and muslim communalists and Christians, including the missionaries and prosthelytizers) and dalits, the more leftist you are. They want to believe that they are atheists, but mostly support the Abrahamic faiths. They feel that they are very generous and on a moral high ground compared to the lowly others to be supporting muslims. They believe they are the intellectuals. They support and sympathize with the gun trotters, from maoists to jehadi terrorists, including Kasab.

Not really. Religious extremists are right wingers as are social conservatives whose positions are informed by religion. The actual religion matters little. Per Marx religion is the opiate of the masses.

To idefix: It is not a false dichotomy. Compare the leftists of US with those from India. Huge difference! Indian leftists are mostly influenced by the communist ideologies and their first and foremost trait is that of being anti-hindu, no matter what. Irrational intolerance to Hinduism. Think Arundati Roy, N. Ram,etc

American leftists are not influenced by the russian or chinese communist ideologies. They are more free thinkers, more on the lines of breaking the shackles of the organized religions. Probably the hippie culture has a lingering influence on the society and there's subtle mark of the eastern philosophies. Think Steve Jobs and other baby boomers. I didn't say they are not christian. They just are not these conservative 'my way or the high way' christians. Think Obama, Oprah, etc. Your examples from the bible don't make any sense.

I had already answered this earlier. I'm not interested in what the text book definition of Leftist Ideology is as much as what the Left parties (extreme, moderate and other variants) and their intellectuals support or take stand for or against. And in the Indian context, all my observations are true and verifiable. I'm not even debating on the Left in US vs India as the original comment that triggered this thread was based on Indian political and intellectual elite that is Left of Center.

i don't know what you mean by not accepting the textbook definition of leftist ideology. language works as a tool for communication because people agree on what words mean. if you did not mean the commonly accepted meaning of the word, then why use it at all instead of using a word or a phrase that more accurately conveys what you did have in mind?

But when we talk of Brahmans on the street we talk of their merits or demerits but not those of what the book defined.
