But if Rahul Gandhi does become member from Amethi yet again, the comparison in 2019 will not be between Amethi and Gujarat but between Amethi and Varanasi, which Narendra Modi will represent in Parliament. The BJP candidate for Prime Minister has specified, in detail, how he plans to convert Varanasi into a world capital of tourism, develop a lucrative market for the products of its superb weaving craftsmen and of course clean the Ganga. His agenda is set.

Interesting part of that article.

"There has been much heat about the Gujarat model of growth. Have you ever wondered why no one talks about any Amethi model? Simple answer: there isn't any. Interrogators, who come armed with minute variations within Gujarat statistics, never seem to ask Rahul Gandhi why there isn't a road or a single decent medical facility in Amethi. "

It's easy to poke fun of Rahul Gandhi's pathetic record as an MP and clear desperation in the final stages of the campaigning but comparing the achievements of a central legislator (MP) and a chief executive (CM) is absurd. The latter can accomplish an order of magnitude more than what an MP can influence in his constituency. In fact, beyond the Rs 5 cr of civil projects that an MP can drive as part of the Local Area Devpt Scheme (MPLADS), there is precious little he or she can do about the basic amenities in his constituency - those are state subjects, executed by the local district administration as directed by the state government.

If it was some rookie journo writing this, one might have excused this as ignorance of basic civics. But this is MJ Akbar, no less. For him to take this tack is disingenuity at its worst. Before pointing a finger at Rahul Gandhi, he should first talk a bit about the pathetic development record of his own constituency, Kishanganj, which he represented as an MP back in the 90s when he was a CONgoon.

First of all , RG is not just an MP. The whole UPA govt was at his command. Second , the party in charge of the state govt was a friendly party. When the whole blame was placed on the state govt , the BJP asked to make public how many letters were written to the state govt by the said MP regarding issues that needed to be taken care of. There was silence from the Cong side. Third of all , the MPLADS funds were not even spent fully and this coupled with the attendance record in parliament shows the total neglect and contempt that the Shehzada had for Amethi. And it was not like he was terribly busy. He was just holidaying most of the time. Fourth point , The comparison has to be made with what each contender was in charge of , and how seriously they took their responsibilities to the people who elected them.

Yes, those are valid points. But like I said earlier, Rahul Gandhi's failings should be seen on a standalone basis, or in comparison with the records of other VVIP MPs, and not be mischievously juxtaposed against a "Gujarat model". A CM and an MP are not comparable.

An interesting side note:
Some time back , there were some complaints about the quality of Ghee used in Tirupati Laddoos and other prasadams. When the local newspapers like Eenadu started investigating, they found that the contract to supply Ghee was awarded to a dairy company based in Rae Barelli. Not to dairies in nearby AP or Karnataka as used to be the practice. Why ? The chairman of TTD board who is a cong MP insisted on that because he wanted to impress Shrimati Soniaji and score some brownie points.
When you have such "loyal than the king" sycophants , all that is needed is just dropping some hints and things get done with amazing speed.

Here is a video ( in telugu) which mentions the quality problems with Ghee supplied to TTD by Rai Bareilly based Premier Agri foods.
