i've been thinking about getting this based on vedantam's frequent NPR appearances, but have held off. here is a bias of mine -- tending to judge without reading that a book on a scientific topic by a journalist is likely to be superficial.

Phantoms in the Brain - Isn't that one by a scientist that covers similar topics to do with the sub conscious and the unconscious brain?

no totally different. that one is by vilayanur ramachandran on the brain itself and how damage to its various parts creates bizarre behavioral phenomena. this one is a book on psychology, about biases that human beings carry in various walks of life without realizing it and its various manifestations.
