Sadhguru on Vegetarianism
Saw Sadhguru's talk with Celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay on Vegetarianism.
His points did not come out clearly. It is possible that editing was the culprit.
At one point he is seen remarking that he considers Plants and Animals as the same.
I do not think I can agree to this.
There is a distinction between Plants and Animals. We cannot deny it.
Apart from the points he mentioned, some of which are related to beliefs of indic religions
I feel the following points could have been illustrated. Many of the points
below are facts, so nobody can deny them.
a) The fact that Human Body is more suited towards vegetarian diet. He alluded to this
but did not emphasize it.
b) Consuming animals out of necessity is different than consuming animals out of choice.
c) An animal consumes much more of earth's resources (plant life, Water, Soil Nutrients)
to feed one person as opposed to feeding the same person using vegetarian
diet. For example, a Goat consumes large amount of plant life compared
to somebody directly feeding on vegetarian diet.
So a vegetarian diet is more sustainable as the population grows.
This is the most IMPORTANT issue in vegetarianism.
So even if somebody does not do it for religious reasons, the objective is to
minimize Non-vegetarian diet rather than completely eliminating it.
This makes it more sustainable, and this approach has a better chance to
support a growing population.
d) There are vegetarian alternatives to Proteins like Soy and Lentils, even though they may be
second quality proteins.
e) It is less healthy. It has more cholesterol and high fat content.
Fish is better than meat in this aspect.
But Fish has got other sources of contaminants like mercury etc..
f) There are more chances of coming in contact with disease causing organisms,
(especially if the meat/fish is raw/semi-cooked) compared to a Vegetarian diet.

that vegetarianism is a more efficient way of feeding an ever growing population. basically a food calorie when it is converted from grain to meat is diminished in value and hence fewer people can be fed on that original calorie.

Re: Sadhguru on Vegetarianism
Is this really a fact? Pre-agricultural human societies are not vegetarian. Evolution produced a human species that eats meat.rawemotions wrote:Many of the points

i remember a discussion, can't remember if it was at sulekha or here where we discussed (c) in raw-em's post. i remember looking up efficiencies of vegetarianism versus meat eating, land and water resource usage in both types of diets, and the ability to feed a growing population. i tried but couldn't find the thread. my googling skills aren't good enough.

from an evolutionary perspective:
eating meat made us have bigger brains and smaller stomachs.

Re: Sadhguru on Vegetarianism
i haven't seen sadguru's video, but why would someone interested in eating better take advice from a spiritual guru and not a nutritionist and/or chef? do you also take advice on trading from him? what about medical advice? is there a line and where do you draw it?

sadhuguru's words:
"flexibility of muscles will be lost with too much non-vegetarian food"
"only 3% of the body consists of of protein"
"most martial arts practitioners and several top level athletes are vegetarians"
true?
