Rashmun asked "Why are more Tamils learning Hindi?"

When asked this question several years ago Dr. Thanjai Nalankilli told a story.

A pimp abducted several girls from a village and sold her to a Delhi brothel. These girls refused to provide sex to clients. They were refused food. After a couple of days the girls agreed. This is like Hindi imposition. Tamils learn Hindi because those who have Indian gov jobs must know Hindi or their salary increments are withheld and not promoted. A memo issued by Southern railways says "strict action should be taken against those who do not work in Hindi".

You would have known these things if you read Tamil Tribune regularly. I will put a link to their archives. Read it. Then make it a point to read TAMIL TRIBUNE every month.

these people give different reasons for wanting their kids to learn hindi.

Parents opt for Hindi over Tamil in TN schools

Chennai:
Their grandfathers took to the streets, raised slogans and even went to
prison, protesting against the “imposition” of Hindi in Tamil Nadu in
the 1960s. More than four decades later, many Tamil kids are studying
the “rashtra bhasha” even before they can pick up the alphabets of their
mother tongue.

Raj and Aruna did not think twice when they
got a note from their son’s school to specify the second language they
wanted their kid to learn from first standard onwards. Their unanimous
choice was Hindi.

In fact, about 90% of their son’s
classmates will be studying Hindi as the second language, as young
parents feel their children’s horizon should extend beyond the
boundaries of the state.

“At a time when we are talking
about a global village, we cannot say no to Hindi anymore. Once we cross
the state’s borders, we need to know Hindi for survival. I don’t want
my son to be handicapped due to lack of knowledge of Hindi,” said Raj, a
software professional.

“Unlike those in government jobs,
people working in the private sector have to shuttle from one state to
another. Hindi comes in handy at such times,” said Aarthi, a HR manager
in a private firm.

However, the new-found love for Hindi is
not going down well with the older generation. Soundararajan, a retired
state government employee, regrets that his grandchildren are’t learning
Tamil. “I am not against Hindi, but feel that children should learn to
read and write their mother tongue first.”

“We have been
advising parents to opt for Tamil as it is the state language. Though we
tell them that their children still get to learn Hindi as a second
language in the upper classes, parents clamour for Hindi,” said a
teacher working for a leading CBSE school.

State public works
minister Duraimurugan, one of the prominent student leaders who
participated in the anti-Hindi agitation in 1965, said only the elite
prefer Hindi over Tamil.

It is good to know that Hindi is being received better these days in TN.

I
was myself raised in a staunchly anti-Hindi Madras. It used to be so
bad that my school received 3 bomb threats (over a period of 7 years) as
it promoted Hindi (I went to an Arya Samaj run school). Thanks to my
parents, I was forced to choose Hindi and Sanskrit in school and despite
my handicap in speaking the language, I can read and write quite well
with limited understanding. Subsequently, due to the efforts of my
Mother and my own interest, I learnt to read Tamil as well.

I
feel that every Indian (including Tamils) must learn Hindi. I'm sure
Tamil chauvinists from TN will disagree with me. But as an Indian living
outside India, I have found that Hindi is the unifying language amongst
Indians. I went to grad school in the US and in a class that had 18
Indian students, I was the only one who could not communicate in Hindi.
Even students from Kerala, AP and Karnataka were fluent.

It was
then that I realized that the DMK had just been propagating a lie that
the spread of Hindi would make Tamil extinct. All my fellow south
Indians continue to speak their mother tongue with the same ease with
which they speak Hindi.

Afterall, Mr.Karunanidhi when asked
about why his grand nephew was being given so much importance in Delhi,
remarked that it was because he had good command over Hindi. So,
obviously he has a different yardstick when it comes to his family.

From
my personal experience, I have found it to be a huge handicap not to be
fluent in Hindi. I'm sure others may disagree. But I hope we start
looking beyond petty politics and learn to adapt and embrace other
languages and culture - assimilating it into ours (without letting go of
ours).

In most big schools, there are 2 Indian student associations these days 1. by Indians from India, 2. ABCDs.

Apparently, the Indians from India do not like the ABCD and dont consider/include them in activities bcz they dont speak hindi (most of them). So the ABCDs have their own organization, shows.

when i was in canada, there were two indian students associations like you point out. one for FOBs like me, one for ABCDs. it was possible to be a member of both. the distinction was not because of the language issue. the association for FOBs included both NIs and SIs. Some of the SIs from TN spoke only broken hindi. i was a member of only the FOB student association.

i think the major difference was that the ABCDs had more money than the FOBs. And so the ABCD association would organize things like ship cruises and expensive parties for their members. FOB's--many of who were working part time--could not afford the expensive activities of the other association and hence preferred not to join it.

Your views were correct in THOSE days, but are obsolete and outdated.
