(Reuters) - As an election campaigner, Narendra Modi promised sweeping market reforms to revive India's economy and put the country to work. As prime minister, he has dismayed admirers, apparently reverting to the script of the hapless government he defeated.

To some of the economists and business leaders who as his campaign cheerleaders dared to dream of a Thatcherite revolution, he seems not to be listening. Three months after his win, it is dawning on them that their views count for little.

NEW DELHI — During the months leading up to the parliamentary elections in April and May, Indians looked at Mr Narendra Modi and saw what they wanted to see.

Right-wing Hindus saw a cultural warrior. Working-class voters saw an incorruptible outsider who would impose discipline, from the “Delhi durbar”, the elite cliques dating to the Mughal courts, down to police constables. Industrialists counted on having an advocate at the top. And public intellectuals in New Delhi, among them centrists who had abandoned the Indian National Congress party, saw an economic reformer who would use his enormous mandate to introduce bold, potentially unpopular policies that would reawaken growth.

Someone was bound to be disappointed.

About two months after Mr Modi’s swearing-in in late May, the first chorus of disappointment emerged from advocates of radical change, including some who served as economic advisers during his campaign.

Mr Pratap Bhanu Mehta, president of the Center for Policy Research, wrote in The Indian Express that Mr Modi’s government had frittered away its honeymoon period on “an odd combination of trifles, bureaucratic cross hairs, alibis, risk averseness and a shadowy politics of stealth”.

I was wondering if the confused dude was gonna pickup this story. if the same story were posted about his any of his idols in andhra pradesh or US, he'd be saying give him some time to fix the mess the previous govt made. good to see he's even handed and has kept perspective

India is a big country and its economy is like a huge aircraft career. As anyone knows (except CMAGS) that it is absolutely necessary to turn around a large carrier very slowly.

If the ship is turned around like a speed boat - as CD and the CMAGS would like Modi to do - then it will sink, just like what Yeltsin did to Russia.

Modi ji...take your time... dont listen to the Ma-Bheta white skin lovers.

I'm sure you don't like Obama either who took 5 years to turn around economy "in a well functioning system". India is not that lucky.

I know people who were disappointed with Modi within 15 days after he became PM. Smile

You are soooo generous, you gave Modi 3 months.

Do you think people who still have a job today in US (including you), need to thank Obama for not letting the economy melt down after 2007?

Well said. Anyone who demands action and fulfillment of election promises must be a fukular sickular. True chaddis will abide by their ~~Supreme Leader~~ God regardless.

Forget fixing messes, it looks like this govt is emulating the previous one, going by the spineless capitulation on the UPSC CSAT issue or on GM crops. The 56 inch chest was just hot air it seems.
