India is confronting the prospect of hanging two sisters convicted of abducting and murdering young children – the first time it would have used the death sentence against women.

Renuka Shinde, 41, and 36-year-old Seema Gavit were convicted in 2001 of kidnapping and killing five children in the western state of Maharashtra. Originally charged with the deaths of 13 children, the court heard they kidnapped the youngsters as part of a begging operation and then brutally disposed of them when they were no longer of any use.

Hanging them is being too easy on them for the horrific crimes that they committed. Several life imprisonments (i.e without the chance of parole) of strict solitary confinement in the dungeon kind of dark, solitary cells (like the one we see in 'silence of the lambs') without any contact with the outside world (no tv, radio, books, sunlight) is the right punishment for them.

Too expensive to create and maintain solitary dungeons. Eliminating them is good.

Do the solitary dungeons even exist in India? I thought the death penalty proves more costlier what with the appeals and re-appeals for years and years together. Look at this case. It's been going on and on forever! Who pays for the lawyers and all?

Not sure about Mainland but British did create some in the Andamans. Appeals and re-appeals can happen even if they are sentenced to such solitary cells. It is the issue with the judicial system that cannot distinguish between open and shut cases having multiple direct and corroborating evidences vs. those where the evidences were indirect and circumstantial from get go leaving a lot of grey 'what-if, may-be' areas. The appeals and execution process needs to revamped to favor the latter over the former.

I think they died pretty much every time they heard an execution sentence. At this point, they must be like - hang me already and be done with this. If not, then yeah, they probably need to hear more of these verdicts before actually getting executed.

being born into poverty was their punishment. being women meant they has less access to food and education. their mom did not teach them about ethics and civic duty, she taught them a life of crime. she could not provide for them in an honest way and she could not afford to pay a dowry to get them married off to iit guys in america. they hunted like animals, and lived lives of poverty, desperation and crime. that pork-like president could've easily afforded them clemency.

while they should be confined, having come to our attention, they should be allowed a chance to learn and reform behind bars.

Thinking the women must be 23 and 18 at the time they were caught in 1996, and even younger when they killed those kids. The younger one wasn't treated as a minor?

Tough one, they were, atleast the older one was an adult and knew what she was doing all along. I can see the point where the mother led them to the path of crime, although you never know if it was they themselves who were this cruel. But come on. Poverty as an excuse? What about a million others living under the same conditions? How does that justify killing kids mercilessly?

shut the fuck up...poverty and childhood neglect is an excuse for mutilation and butchering of tiny children for profit? I heard some shit from you over the years but this takes the cake

Seema, Renuka, their mother Anjanbai, and Renuka's husband Kiran Shinde were petty thieves, who kidnapped children to be used as a cover for their activities. It started in 1990 when Renuka was caught pickpocketing at the Chatursinghi temple in Pune. Her son, Ashish, from her first marriage was with her. Renuka used him as her defence, convincing the crowd that a woman with a child couldn't possibly be a thief. On realising that a child could save them from tricky situations, the gang began kidnapping children to be used as a front. And the children would be killed if they became a problem. The mother and daughters were already charged with petty crimes when they started their killing spree.
