Re: THURSDAY CRYPTICS - 9/4
indo, needed to understand how the clues work. e.g. i was looking for 4 letter synonyms for disdain, coz I assumed last letter would be an S as the clue said expresses. Is that how it usually goes, or is that inconsistent.

BK:
The clue is:
1. European expresses disdain for job as below his standing. (5)
Dane = European
Expresses = Homophone indicator (someone talking creating sound)
Deign = disdain for job as below one's standing (or dismissing a job as too lowly)
All the clues in the set are homophones.

Thanks for the explanation Indo.
A couple of sites that I sometimes look up, the tense of the clue is also a part of the clue. So if someone says 'expresses', then look for verbs ending with 's', if 'expressed' then look for verbs with 'ed' and so on. Hence I began looking for 4-word synonyms for disdain. I guess I am wrong in assuming that.

Re: THURSDAY CRYPTICS - 9/4
For homophone indicator (a "sound" word) such as express/sing/shout etc., the tense or person doesn't matter. It just follows to fit the clue "surface" (what you see at first glance).
For other types of clues, singular/plural or first person/second person/third person, and the tense of the verb in the clue may matter.

Well something to fill the interludes between lunches, defecating, tidings of pumped up secularism, things muslim, the Commander's meanderings while philandering in heaven/hell, Modi, Andhra happenings, Hindi and Hindians, etc.
