Hero-worshipping
Is there any difference between those in India who wanted to be arrested along with Jayalaitha and the ones that want to see Modiji in America? I guess that trait is ingrained in our culture, not easy to shed.

Obama mania grips europe. 200,000 people attend Obama rally.
These american and european cultures. Just hero worshippers. See where they are now.
oops, you meant those sheep like chaddiwallah Indians. I got carried away. May be that is also in our culture.

Re: Hero-worshipping
I am watching live from Madison Square garden on TV Asia. It's a festive environment there. Thousands of people are watching the show. Kavitha Krishnamurti is singing 'Vaishnava Janato'. There's this white dude whose head is shaved except for a lil 'pilaka' (strand of hair) at the back, resembling the hair style of the hindu pujaris, painting a pic of Modi on stage. He did it beautifully. Nina Davuluri is compering the show. Damn these bloody indians and their ingrained culture of hero worship and yeah, how dare they have fun!
Edit: btw, if you have a dish satellite, TV Asia is offering their channel for free, temporarily i guess to enable ppl to watch these.
Beautiful dance now to Vande Mataram. Kullu kune vaallu kullukondi

Any non-Indian Americans bother about Modi? and who was Obama addressing in Europe. Also, do you think Modi addressing to NRIs in NY is similar to Clinton addressing to Indians in Hyderabad?truthbetold wrote:CD

I agree... India is going bad to worse. They are forgetting that they are expected to worship only Western people and white skinned people - like Sonia Mata Ji. Indians are losing their standards.

OK..ok..I know what you are beating around...
Modi is demon and all those who voted, supported and participating in the madison Sq garden and those who are watching the show or reading about it are all Hindu terrorists.
Now happy ?

oh well, CD, you may want to know that there are probably 30 congress men/women who are attending the show and they all have been called on to the stage. Modi is also coming on to the stage now.

Does it matter? As usual you make an irrelevant point and run away.
When europeans turned up in large numbers to see obama it is because they were hoping there will be a change in direction. Obama as president of USA could affect an ordinary european. That is the connection. They want to see him in person and feel the electricity in such an event. Those who showed are also probably more socially conscious and active.
People going to modi's meeting can be placed into similar catagory. Why only NRIs, you ask. Because modi is the PM of a developing country and his actions are likely to affect mostly indians and NRIs who care about India. NRIs who feel for their nation of origin has a real chance of transforming into a mature nation allowing entrepreneurship to blossom are taking real time to go and see modi. They probably want to participate in India's growth in a small way.
Your reasoning as usual is sour grapes. It has no basis.
State what metrics would you suggest to use to check Modi's success after 5 years. That makes for real discussion instead of throwing mud and writing meaningless words.

Re: Hero-worshipping
Read the sentence carefully. I said 'people', not indians. I said 'its' (india's), not 'their'. People (NRIs included) are happy that India has Modi as 'its' leader and are celebration it.michelle2 wrote:Kinnera wrote:Why should anyone bother whether non-indian americans bother about Modi or not? Just because NRIs are american citizens doesn't make them lose their freedom to feel happy for india and celebrate its new leader.
The wording was also as such on stage too. Nina said, 'Let's all rise up to sing 'our' National anthem' and then American national anthem was sung. Then she said, let's sing the Indian anthem and 'jana gana mana' was sung.
Just because a woman is married and moved to her inlaws' place and makes it her home doesn't mean she abandons and ignores her parents' home. Same here.

No they don't fall into similar category because Americans living in Europea did not spend millions of dollars to showcase their loyalty to their self-aggrandizing pompous leader.truthbetold wrote:

TBT: The money is spent by those who felt that Obama's win would change things. There is american money and european money. But that is an unnecessary side tracking discussion. My answers below your yours. Once again your opinion does not automatically become a fact. The only way modi repays these massive nri group is by providing low corruption highly effective high growth peaceful india. if that is self aggrandizing, indians seem to be ok with it. If modi enhances India's prestige around the world through economic success, then indian people may even tolerate modi's pomposity .

If it was about his victory in Indian general elections then the theme should have been all about India and how can they help their country India. If it was Americans inviting Modiji as a chief guest then I'm not sure why they were celebrating his victory in Indian elections, very very confusing.truthbetold wrote:Kinnera,Kinnera wrote:Explain why you think so.confuzzled dude wrote:So there was no true love for India. Re: Hero-worshipping
This is populism at its very best: Modi made everyone believe what was happening at Madison Square Garden was about them. It was actually about him—his power, his ego, his success.
As the speech finished— a well-curated number, except for the terrible English translation of the speech—the flag of India was superimposed on Modi’s image. Slowly, his face became the wheel at the centre of the flag. It does not get more obvious than that.
Modi, not India, took over New York this weekend. His mistakes and shadows seem already forgotten. He, a few months after being elected, and his promises are already celebrated like victories. The crowd drank every word, and welcomed small, unsurprising announcements (the visa on arrival that has been in the works from before he was elected) as if they were big achievements (as the chain of claim of credit for the nuclear deal before him).
Personalities like Modi get remembered for who they are, not what they did. His US tour has assured his place in history
http://qz.com/272521/how-narendra-modi-made-history-in-new-york/
Those few lines gave perfect description of this mania.
