Organized religion is what Bill is opposed to.
Modern Islamists (the militant ones) are like the Christian militants of the past. They are fanatical, intolerant of others and use inhuman methods to achieve what they want. They are less intelligent than the average dog.
The main culprit is - the belief in being "God's chosen people". The morons first create this "God" as an external agency and then proclaim that that God doesn't allow any other belief system.

Yeah, Bill Maher and Sam Harris are true liberals. This is what i've been saying all along. Every 'Fukular Sikular' tom dick and harry wants to believe that he's a liberal and acts like one. Ben Affleck is an idiot and clearly comes across as one. Sam Harris is intelligent, is an expert on the subject and knows what he's talking about, but Ben refuses to listen to him and goes on and on with his emotional outbursts. The other two siding him stutter and mince for words and were just trying to justify something that they themselves aren't convinced about.
As someone commented:
At 1:10 "The crucial point of confusion is that we have been sold this meme of islamophobia, where every criticism of the doctrine of Islam gets conflated with bigotry towards Muslims as people."
And then Ben proceeds to spend the next nine minutes proving Sam right.

Use your commonsense, CD. Yes, it's easy to take a survey anonymously and the survey results show a nice rosy picture. But, to come out into the open and oppose takes guts in the islamic religion. Tell me how many do it. The ones who do it get death threats, get shot (like poor malala) and have to go underground or go around with security. Maher made that point in that video too.confuzzled dude wrote:http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2014/10/06/ben-affleck-and-bill-maher-are-both-wrong-about-islamic-fundamentalism/

As a genuine intelligent liberal, he tilts more towards eastern spirituality. Not surprising at all.Kinnera wrote:Read about Sam Harris:

"Spirituality
Harris wishes to incorporate spirituality in the domain of human reason. When Harris considered the differences between the philosophies of the East and the West, he wrote:[26]p. 215...the difference is unmistakable: Buddha, Shankara, Padmasambhava, Nagarjuna, Longchenpa, and countless others down to the present have no equivalents in the West. In spiritual terms, we appear to have been standing on the shoulders of dwarfs. |
While the philosophy of Advaita, and Ramana’s own words, may tend to support a metaphysical reading of teachings of this kind, their validity is not metaphysical. Rather, it is experiential. The whole of Advaita reduces to a series of very simple and testable assertions: Consciousness is the prior condition of every experience; the self or ego is an illusory appearance within it; look closely for what you are calling “I,” and the feeling of being a separate self will disappear; what remains, as a matter of experience, is a field of consciousness—free, undivided, and intrinsically uncontaminated by its ever-changing contents." |

ya, Sufism is a more esoteric and peaceful form of Islam. But they are a minority and unfortunately they too are persecuted by other muslims.Rashmun wrote:Kinnera wrote:Use your commonsense, CD. yes, mostly in the south, in small towns and villages that i know of. At least in my native place, hindus visit dargahs and celebrate the peerla pandaga (peer festival) along with muslims. But, hyderabadi muslims are mostly sunnies, if i am right. Or maybe shias. Can see the stark difference between the hydi muslims and non-hydi.Rashmun wrote:Kinnera wrote:ya, Sufism is a more esoteric and peaceful form of Islam. most indian muslims are inclined towards sufism.
90-95 % of indian muslims are sunnis and perhaps 80% or more of Indian sunnis muslims are barelvi muslims. barelvi muslims are inclined towards sufism and visit and pray before tombs and shrines of sufi saints. the other sect of sunni muslims in India are deobandi muslims. deobandis consider sufism to be a heretical sect and will not pray before a sufi tomb or shrine. deobandis also say that the barelvis worship tombs and shrines of sufi saints by virtue of imitating hindu worship in temples. just like hindus worship their gods in temples, so the tombs and shrines of sufi saints are decorated with flowers, incense stick is lighted before it, and so on. (i think the tika may also be applied but i am not sure.) this may be compared with the tomb of prophet Mo (in saudi arabia) which is not worshipped and in fact it is considered heretical to start worshipping before the tomb of Prophet Mo. One is liable to get into trouble, and perhaps receive some punishment, if one were to start openly praying before the tomb of Prophet Mo, burn incense sticks in front of it, and so on in the way sufi tombs and shrines are revered and respected (by both hindus and muslims).
i am not sure but i think most hyderabadi muslims are shia muslims. i am uncertain about the attitude of shia muslims towards sufism.
