Kailash and Malala awarded Nobel Peace Prize 2014
Good to know, Good for them.
A 17-year old woman and a 60-year old man from different religions and backgrounds, contributing in their own way to make a big impact and difference.

Just now read the news..... Malala is a "Star" while Satyarthi is an unknown. Great to see a "child" and an "old man" recognized for something truly relevant to the humanity.
P.S. Not surprised that SuCHers are busy "discussing" methods to solve world's REAL PROBLEMS.

Re: Kailash and Malala awarded Nobel Peace Prize 2014
Looks like Nobel committee is becoming sikular!
Is it possible that the tussle between India and Norway re. the taking away of a Bengali kid from (abusive) parents in Norway has played a role? Apparently, Satyardhi (unknown in India) is well-known in The Netherlands. May be, the Dutch lobbied for his award.
Malala, I think, deserves recognition for her courage. Hopefully, Pakis will go on the streets and beat up some taliban and other fanatical terrorists.
In India, clearly, child labour and traficking are an evil and need to be addressed. Hopefully, Modi will take up the issue and shame child traffickers.

I had not heard of kailash satyarthi before. he's a good-looking man. I wonder if he's from odisha.
it seems inappropriate to say "good for them"; they would say "good for the exploited children of india and the world," and "good for the oppressed girls of pakistan and the world."

We SuCHers ask, Why a Northindian?
"Could they not find a Southindian?" is a more important question.

We can also make Vidisha part of southindia only for a few days and claim he's southindian.

A shrewd move by the Nobel Committee ... one prize recognizing the contributions to society by two individuals (different genders, different age groups, different religions) and at the same time making two countries (usually at odds with each other) very proud.
Re: Kailash and Malala awarded Nobel Peace Prize 2014
An Indian wins a noble prize and this place becomes dead silent
I have watched "A Wednesday" many times over and love the last few dialogues.
Something like..."We shook hands...but don't want to reveal his name as people start finding religion, reason through name."
When celebrating India's success....the same is true about this forum from region/language point of view... as there are more linguists here than people.

Truly deserving of such a coveted award, particularly an unknown like Kailash for humanitarian efforts, as compared to recognizable names like Obama, Al Gore and Jimmy Carter.

Re: Kailash and Malala awarded Nobel Peace Prize 2014
Malala deserves credit for her courage . Her family deserves praise for supporting her through this ordeal. It is heartening to see her continuing her bold work after recovery from the brutal attack.
Still I am somewhat ambivalent about her winning Nobel prize. This reminds me of Obama Nobel prize . The body of work is very limited in time to place them next to people like lech walesa , jimmy carter and doctors without borders.
I hope she will continue to contribute to inspire more Pakistani women.

excellent choices. she got shot in the head and has been an advocate for girls' education in a repressive and retrograde society which is also dangerous. she certainly deserves to win. i had not heard of sathyarthi, but have been reading up on the important work he has been doing.

I kind of agree, though it is commendable that they are recognized and their work is taken more seriously by those in power.Vakavaka Pakapaka wrote:

On related note, another person who was nominated for this prize from Mumbai:
http://www.thehindu.com/features/magazine/a-fight-for-dignity/article6471001.ece
“Jockin, Slum Dweller.” That is how, Jockin Arputham, from Dharavi, Mumbai, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year, introduces himself in any public forum. All his life Jockin has been fighting for dignity, for the ‘weakest of the poorest person’. Except that when he chanced into his line of work, in 1969, he had ‘no theory, philosophy, nor a political compulsion.’

The difference between shame and pride is mostly in perception, one's own and others'.

No one is disputing Malala's courage or contribution. Nobel peace prize was generally awarded to individuals or groups that have a long history of service. At least that is my perception of the difference between CNN hero award vs Nobel peace prize.
Malala is still young and is very well recognized. She could have been recognized in a few years after she contributed to the same cause as an adult.
Nobel comm picked Obama to make a statement despite his rather short resume. He did not do anything extraordinary to help advance peace in the last several years.

She lives in Birmingham, UK. It has its moments but it is not Pakistan. She now has a chance and a platform to push her agenda.Kris wrote:>>>She is gutsy. Well, one thing is sure ... no one probably will be able to beat her in terms of age, as the youngest Nobel Prize recipient.

That's the theory, but in practice it has been used as a tool for Scandinavian libruls to make political statements. My point is, as political statements go she is not a bad choice. Better than Yassir Arafat and that Israeli guy.

My guess is that her education will continue. Emma watson completed her school while acting in Harry porter and then attended Brown university.Beatrix Kiddo wrote:i wonder if Malala is continuing her studies, given that she has so much more on her plate now.
My guess is Malala will be invited to join universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and Yale.

My thoughts exactly. But CD is already agitated over J&K muslim birth rates. So out of concern for his health, I skipped that line.
