aaj ma ki barsi thi
today was my mother's barsi. this is her:
in the back is my bhabhi who committed suicide 6 years into marriage. her husband is my best friend. he raised 2 kids - daughter and son single-handedly. his daughter is a doctor in UK now and son is an engineer pursuing MBA after 2 years in corporate world.
today my mom came to my house. she ate and appreciated the puris, halwa, sabzi and dahi bada we had made for her. then she blessed us. then she travelled to my younger son's room and kissed him. then she travelled to kolkata high court where i have a writ petition against KMC for a demand of 4 crores and she whispered something to the judge and then she suddenly left. immediately after that, the judge stayed the rs 4 crore demand.

She is happy that her lineage will be continuing through her grandchildren. And you forgot to mention that when she went quietly to her grandchildren and blessed them she also whispered to them to be good to their father.

i am glad to be a member of this forum; where else would i be exposed to north indian culture, including their phood (puris, halwa, sabzi, dahi bhallae(n)), their women's attire (head covered, gauzy sarees, clothes of red, pink, orange, and lime-green, all on the same person, at the same time), and the feeling that soon they're going to dance for the aging minor raja whom the moghal emperor has put in charge of behrampur.

what did she whisper to the judge? did she make some kind of an offer to him? of what? is she a v.v.i.p.? you guys are wealthy, aren't you? you eat halwas all the time, even sabzis, and have a sink installed in your verandah! (i remember the photograph you proudly posted once, that featured that sink!)

Barsi is a Hindu ritual for the dead. When he says his mother whispered to the judge he really means his mother's ghost or spirit whispered to the judge. He is of course imagining this taking advantage of the fact that writers have creative license to imagine these kind of scenarios.

currently, my indian, women friends are: 1) a maharashtrian who is married to a kannadiga; she wears nice, subdued, but elegant sarees; 2) a bengal-u.p. person (her parents are from those parts of india) who's married to a european. i've never seen her in a sari. i know only one malayali who's not a relative, and she's an acquaintance, not a friend.
i've only known male northeasterners, and that was at the institute. carole farestone symilieah tried to teach me to play the guitar. thanhuna, a naga, tried to teach me to wear naga woollen leggings in hot old madras, and shoot his tribal bow and arrow.

He's not a glutton; he is only a connoisseur of good food. He did get physical with his wife once but he apologized to her not just privately but publicly. The public apology consisted of writing about it in a forum post knowing that his wife reads his posts. I think he may have been intoxicated when he lost control of himself.

Re: aaj ma ki barsi thi
michelle2 wants all women to be dressed up in the outdated and abandoned color of the malayali christian women's traditional costume, which is white. The poor malayali women of yesteryears didn't have the pleasure of wearing anything in vibrant colors. Hence, michelle2's contempt for women wearing colorful dresses.
