Re: Gita to be India's National Scripture
On behalf of CONartist Manish Tiwari, vote-bank queen Mamata and our own extremely brilliant Sikular Scholars, I condemn this Chaddi book. If youngsters read and digest it, Sikular vote-banks will disappear and MullahYama, Laloo, Ugly Maya, K'nidhi, Jagan, Pappu, et al., will be chased out of the political arena.

This is nonsense. It says women are inferior tpo men.
Only South Asian book that could be a national philosophical work is Thirukural.

I agree Kural is much better than Gita in some aspects.Kayalvizhi wrote:This is nonsense. It says women are inferior tpo men.

Do you know whether Thiruvalluvar was a Tamilian or Jain(ian)? If he happened to be a 'Jain' then he becomes a Naarthie. What you would do?

>>>From a layman's perspective, both are works to be cherished, but they are different in what seek to address. Kural deals with the nitty gritty of living. The Gita is an overarching philosophy which provides broad guidelines. As an aside, I am not sure what a national scripture is or what it does.

While other 'scriptures/Book' like Bible/Quran are not native to India; So bringing 'Gita/Kural' as national book can be accepted. I am not sure whether 'Gita' is used in Courts for Hindus when they take an oath?

>>>More so than the acceptance aspect of it, I was wondering about the idea of a national scripture. I didn't know there was such a thing.
P.S. I thought that we do take our oath on the gita. I assume if the individual is a Christian, it would be the bible etc. How about people who profess no religion?

Hahaha! so much for UCC talk. Is this idea comparable with identifying atheists as terrorists; Where does it stack up in the grand scheme of things?

I thought that is the strength of god(s) fearing people as they bribe them regularly to be on their side.bw wrote:Kris wrote:

In the same spirit, I think it is high time we dump the peacock and the tiger and instead adopt Garuda as our National Bird and the Wild Boar as our National Animal.
Other nominees: Nandi our National Ungulate, Vasuki our National Reptile, Shikandi our National Hermaphrodite, Mohini our National Transgendered Person.
More nominations invited.

Hey, NI Rules OK? Karthilkeya and his peacock are Madrasi inventions, not recognized by our National Epics or National Scripture.

Excuse me. Surphanakha was no gundu maami. She was a svelte, dusky beauty. An outstanding thamizhselvi who was no shrinking violet. Her self-confidence and sexuality intimidated the embodiment of Northindian patriarchy.

ACK portrayed her as quite a gundu mami. so did valmiki as per wiki
Valmiki describes Surpanakha by the time of the Ramayana's events as generally ugly (gora mukhi):
Pot bellied
cross-eyed
Thinning, brown hair
A grating voice that is harsh on the ears.
Oversized breasts; this can be translated to mean a heart full of wickedness.
aha, namma kambar saw things differently though. haha. perceptions, perceptions!
Kamban's description of Surpanakha:
The Tamil poet Kamban offers a kinder description of Surpanakha than Valmiki's, describing her instead as a very beautiful woman with long, beautiful, fish-shaped eyes (validating her birth name of Minakshi), a slender figure and bewitching personality. In addition, she possessed magical powers and could assume any form, an ability which Kamban asserts she used in trying to seduce Rama. The prince was able to see past Surpanakha's ruse and decided to play with her for a while before declining her marriage proposal. In any case, Surpanakha was at least middle-aged when she met the young Rama, and would have appeared as "old" and "haggardly" to the prince.

Re: Gita to be India's National Scripture
Looks like you are creating another controversy. Kayar Vizhi and her friends will refuse to use a Hindian Gita for oath taking in courts. They will insist on Periyar's book.FluteHolder wrote:While other 'scriptures/Book' like Bible/Quran are not native to India; So bringing 'Gita/Kural' as national book can be accepted.
